Cell Block Breakout
The initial phase of your daring escape from the prison begins within the confines of your cell block. This section demands meticulous coordination and stealth between both players, as you navigate through a series of obstacles designed to test your teamwork. Success hinges on precise timing, environmental awareness, and effective use of improvised tools.
Required Tools & Preparation
Before you can even consider leaving your cell, you'll need to acquire a few crucial items. These are essential for bypassing the prison's security measures:
- Chisel: Acquired earlier in the game, the chisel is vital for prying open various fixtures and creating openings.
- Bed Sheet Rope: This improvised tool, crafted from bed sheets, will be your primary means of vertical traversal and descent. Ensure you have enough sheets to create a sturdy rope.
- Wrench: While not immediately needed for the cell block itself, the wrench becomes critical shortly after for accessing the ventilation system.
Phase 1: Escaping Your Cell
Your first objective is to break free from your individual cells. This involves a cooperative effort to manipulate the cell door mechanisms.
- Cell Door Lock Picking: One player will need to interact with the cell door lock. The lock-picking mechanic in A Way Out typically involves a mini-game where you rotate a tumbler or align pins. Communicate with your partner to ensure smooth execution. The other player should be on lookout, ready to alert their partner to approaching guards.
- Creating a Diversion (Optional but Recommended): If a guard is nearby, one player can create a distraction (e.g., banging on the cell door, calling out) to draw their attention away from You attempting to pick the lock. This minimizes the risk of detection.
Phase 2: Navigating the Cell Block Corridor
Once both players are out of their cells, the real challenge begins. The corridor is patrolled by guards and monitored by surveillance cameras.
Guard Patrols & Sightlines
Guards follow predictable patrol routes. Observe their patterns carefully before making any moves. Their sightlines are indicated by a cone of vision; avoid entering this area. If a guard spots you, a quick-time event (QTE) or a struggle sequence may ensue, potentially leading to a restart from the last checkpoint.
- Specific Example: During the initial corridor traversal, a guard often patrols the central aisle. One player can use the cell doors or other environmental elements as cover while the other player moves to a strategic position.
- "Safe" Times/Locations: The moments immediately after a guard turns a corner or enters a cell are generally the safest for movement. Utilize the small alcoves and cell doorways for temporary cover.
Disabling Surveillance Cameras
Several cameras monitor the cell block. Disabling them is crucial for safe passage.
- Identifying Camera Locations: Look for the small, rotating cameras mounted on the walls or ceiling. There is typically one camera at the end of the main corridor, near the entrance to the guard station.
- Cooperative Disabling:
- Distraction Method: One player can create a loud noise or engage a guard in conversation to draw attention away from the camera's field of view.
- Control Panel Interaction: While the camera is distracted or its view is obstructed, the other player should quickly interact with the nearby control panel (often located on a wall opposite or adjacent to the camera). This usually involves a simple button press or a short interaction sequence. For instance, one player might stand directly in the camera's path to block its view while the other disables it.
Accessing the Ventilation System
The ventilation system provides a stealthy route through the cell block, bypassing heavily guarded areas.
- Locating the Vent Entrance: After disabling the initial cameras, look for a large vent cover on the wall or ceiling. This is often found in a less conspicuous area, perhaps near a utility closet or a maintenance access point.
- Prying Open the Vent: Use the chisel to pry open the vent cover. This will require both players to interact with the cover simultaneously, performing a synchronized action (e.g., alternating button presses).
- Navigating the Vents:
- Player Order: One player typically enters first, guiding the way, while the other follows.
- Obstacles: The vents may contain small obstacles or tight squeezes that require specific button prompts to navigate.
- Exiting the Vents: The ventilation system will lead you to a new area, often a utility room or an unguarded corridor, allowing you to bypass the main cell block security.
Phase 3: Descending with the Bed Sheet Rope
After navigating the initial challenges, you'll reach a point where a vertical descent is necessary. This is where your improvised bed sheet rope comes into play.
- Finding the Anchor Point: Locate a sturdy anchor point, such as a pipe, a railing, or a window frame, from which to tie the bed sheet rope. Both interact with the anchor point to secure the rope.
- Tying the Rope: A brief mini-game or interaction sequence will prompt both players to tie the rope securely. Ensure the rope is firmly attached before attempting descent.
- Cooperative Descent: One player will descend first, while the other holds the rope taut from above. Communicate clearly to ensure a controlled and safe descent. You holding the rope will need to maintain tension, often by holding a specific button. Once the first player is down, the second player can then descend.
By meticulously following these steps and maintaining constant communication, you and your partner will successfully navigate the treacherous cell block and move closer to your ultimate freedom.
