Objective: Reach the Research Wing
Welcome, new recruit, to the heart of the Abiotic Factor facility! Your first critical mission is to navigate the treacherous initial sectors and gain access to the Research Wing. This guide will provide a comprehensive, step-by-step walkthrough to ensure your survival and successful completion of this objective.
Initial Orientation and Gear Acquisition
You begin your journey within the administrative offices of Sector 0. Before venturing out, it's crucial to understand your starting equipment and how to acquire essential tools for survival.
- Starting Point: Administrative Offices, Sector 0.
- Initial Gear: You will typically start with a basic Makeshift Shiv (a sharpened piece of metal or plastic) or a similar low-tier melee weapon. This is your primary means of defense until better armaments are found.
- Acquiring Better Makeshift Weapons:
- Crafting: Keep an eye out for loose debris, broken pipes, or discarded tools. Many early-game items can be combined at a crafting bench (or even in your inventory for simple recipes) to create more effective melee weapons like a Makeshift Mace (pipe + duct tape) or a Makeshift Spear (long stick + sharp object).
- Scavenging: Search every desk, cabinet, and locker. You might find a Wrench, a Crowbar, or even a sturdy Broom Handle, all of which are superior to your starting Shiv.
Navigating Sector 0: The Main Corridor
Your path begins by exiting the administrative offices and entering the main corridor of Sector 0.
- Exit the Offices: From your starting position, locate the broken wall or doorway leading east. This will funnel you into the main thoroughfare of Sector 0.
- First Encounter: Grumblers:
- Threat: You will almost immediately encounter your first enemies: Grumblers. These creatures are mutated personnel, characterized by their slow, shambling gait but surprisingly potent melee attacks.
- Strategy:
- Melee Combat: Use your chosen makeshift weapon. Aim for the head, as this is their critical weak point and will significantly reduce the number of hits required to dispatch them.
- Stamina Management: Grumblers are slow, allowing you to kite them. Utilize dodges (typically 'Alt' or 'Space' key) to avoid their attacks. Conserve your stamina; running out leaves you vulnerable.
- Environmental Awareness: Look for choke points or environmental hazards that can be used to your advantage.
- Proceed East: Continue moving through the main corridor, clearing any additional Grumblers you encounter. Keep an eye out for lootable containers along the way.
The Research & Development Junction
As you progress, the corridor will open up into a junction, a pivotal point for reaching your objective.
- Locate the Signpost: At the junction, search for a clear signpost or directional indicator pointing towards 'Research & Development'. Follow this path.
- The Locked Door: Your way will be blocked by a locked door requiring a Security Keycard Level 1.
- Acquiring the Keycard:
- Location: The necessary keycard is typically found on a deceased scientist. This unfortunate individual is usually located in a small, easily overlooked office or cubicle just before the junction leading to the locked door. Thoroughly check all side rooms and alcoves in this area.
- Retrieval Tip: The scientist's body is usually unguarded, but the area might still contain a lurking Grumbler. Approach cautiously. There's no complex puzzle involved; simply interact with the body to retrieve the keycard.
- Alternative Access (Ventilation Shafts): In some instances, or if you prefer a stealthier approach, a ventilation shaft might be accessible nearby. These shafts often require a tool like a Wrench or Crowbar to open the grate. While slower, this can bypass direct confrontation.
- Unlocking the Door: Once you have the Security Keycard Level 1, interact with the security panel next to the locked door to gain access.
Entering the Research Wing
With the keycard in hand and the door open, you are now poised to enter the Research Wing. Exercise extreme caution from this point forward.
- Proceed Cautiously: The Research Wing is often dimly lit, creating an oppressive atmosphere and making it easier for enemies to ambush you. Move slowly, listen for enemy sounds, and use your flashlight (if equipped) judiciously to conserve battery life.
- Increased Threats: Expect to encounter more numerous and potentially new types of threats within the Research Wing. Grumblers will still be present, but be prepared for other mutated entities or environmental hazards.
- Conserve Stamina: As always, stamina management is key. You'll need it for dodging attacks, sprinting to cover, or making a quick escape if overwhelmed.
- Scavenge and Prepare: The Research Wing often contains valuable scientific equipment, crafting materials, and potentially better weapons or healing items. Take your time to thoroughly search each area, but prioritize your safety.
