Welcome to "Into the Caves," the second mission of Act I: Blood in the Age of Empires III campaign. This mission shifts focus from large-scale base building to tactical unit management and exploration. As Morgan Black, your primary task is to pursue Sahin's forces into the treacherous Mediterranean caverns and disrupt their operations. This comprehensive guide will ensure your success, focusing on unit positioning, objective completion, efficient resource use, and navigating the unique challenges of the cave environment.

Initial Deployment and Approach to the Caves

You begin with a small but potent force: Morgan Black (your Explorer), 4 Crossbowmen, and 4 Pikemen. Your immediate goal is to navigate eastward towards the cave entrance, which is typically located on the eastern side of your starting position. The path is linear but features several small ambushes from Ottoman scouts and light infantry.

• Movement and Formation: Advance cautiously. Keep your units grouped together to maximize their combined firepower and defensive capabilities. Place your Pikemen slightly ahead to absorb initial damage, with Crossbowmen and Morgan Black directly behind.
• Morgan Black's Abilities: Morgan Black, as your Explorer, possesses unique abilities crucial for this mission.
  • Sharpshooter Shot: A single-target, high-damage attack excellent for quickly eliminating priority targets like enemy Janissaries, Ottoman Captains, or Abus Guns. Use it frequently.
  • Treasure Collection: Morgan can gather resources from Treasures found on the map. Always be on the lookout for sparkling treasure sites.
  • Healing Aura: Morgan passively heals nearby friendly units. Keep damaged units close to him when not in active combat.
• Unit Composition and Roles:
  • Crossbowmen: Your primary ranged damage dealers against infantry units. Keep them protected behind Pikemen.
  • Pikemen: Essential for tanking damage, acting as a front line, and are particularly effective counters against any cavalry units (Spahis) you might encounter.
• Resource Management: Unlike typical Age of Empires III missions, there is no Town Center or traditional resource gathering from natural sources (trees, mines, hunts). All resources (food, wood, coin) must be acquired from crates scattered throughout the map or through Home City shipments. Be meticulous in exploring every corner and side path to find these vital supplies, as they are your only means of calling in reinforcements or upgrades.

Initial Engagements and Treasure Hunting

As you move towards the cave entrance, you'll encounter small groups of Ottoman units. These usually consist of 2-3 Janissaries or a mix of Janissaries and Ottoman Light Infantry. Engage them with your standard formation, focusing Crossbowmen fire on the Janissaries.

Treasures on the Approach:

• Treasure 1 (Experience): Often found near your starting position, slightly to the north or south of the main path. Contains 100-150 Experience.
• Treasure 2 (Resource Crate - Wood/Food): Typically located near a small rock formation or clump of trees before the cave entrance. Contains 100 Wood or 100 Food.
• Treasure 3 (Minor Units - Dogs/Mercenaries): Sometimes a treasure guardian (e.g., a Wolf or a single Ottoman unit) will guard a treasure that grants 2 War Dogs or 1-2 Mercenary units (e.g., a single Black Rider). These are rare but beneficial.

Ensure Morgan Black collects these treasures. The experience helps level up your Home City faster, providing access to better shipments.

Navigating the Caverns: First Section

Once inside the caves, the environment becomes more challenging, characterized by narrow passages, limited visibility, and increased ambush potential. Careful unit positioning is key. The initial cave path is fairly linear, leading deeper into the mountain.

• Ambush Awareness: The enemy will frequently attempt to ambush your forces from side passages or around corners. These ambushes often involve groups of 3-5 Janissaries or 2 Spahis with 2-3 Janissaries. Always advance with your Pikemen in the lead to absorb the initial impact, followed closely by Morgan Black and your Crossbowmen. This formation allows your ranged units to fire safely from behind the melee screen.
• Choke Points: The caves feature numerous natural choke points. Utilize these to your advantage by positioning your Pikemen to block enemy advances, creating a defensive line while your Crossbowmen fire from relative safety behind them. This strategy is highly effective against large groups of Ottoman infantry.
• Healing and Replenishment: Healing options are severely limited. Morgan Black's passive healing aura is your primary method. Keep damaged units close to him when not in active combat. Actively micro-manage your units: pull back heavily damaged units from the front line to allow them to heal.

Mid-Cave Engagements and Resource Acquisition

As you progress, you'll encounter more substantial enemy patrols and discover resource crates. These crates are vital for calling in Home City shipments.

Common Resource Crate Locations:

• Crate 1 (Food/Wood): Often found shortly after entering the caves, in a small alcove off the main path.
• Crate 2 (Coin): Deeper in, usually guarded by 2-3 Janissaries.
• Crate 3 (Mixed Resources): Sometimes a larger crate containing 100 of each resource (Food, Wood, Coin).

Collect all crates immediately. The resources contribute to your Home City shipments.

Home City Shipments Strategy

As you collect resources, you'll be able to call in Home City shipments. Prioritize shipments that provide additional military units or resource crates if you are critically low on a specific resource needed for a crucial shipment. There are no "Hoop Throwers" available in this mission as they are an Aztec unit from an expansion; focus on standard European units.

Recommended Shipments (in order of priority):

1. 3 Crossbowmen: Boosts your primary ranged damage. Crucial for quickly eliminating Janissaries.
2. 3 Pikemen: Reinforces your front line and provides more anti-cavalry strength.
3. Resource Crates (700 Food / 700 Wood / 700 Coin): If you are struggling to gather enough resources from crates on the map for military shipments, these can provide a quick boost. However, military units are generally more impactful.
4. Advanced Arsenal (Upgrade): If you have excess resources and time, this upgrade can improve your unit's attack and defense, but it's often not necessary for success.

Objective 1: Destroy the Weapon Caches (3 Total)

This objective requires careful planning and execution. Sahin's forces are guarding three weapon caches, typically represented by gunpowder barrels. These caches are often located in more open areas within the caves, sometimes in branching paths.

Weapon Cache 1 Location and Strategy

The first weapon cache is usually found in a slightly wider cavern area, often guarded by a patrol of 4-5 Janissaries and possibly 1-2 Spahis.

• Scouting: Use Morgan Black's superior line of sight to scout ahead and identify the locations of the cache and the enemy patrol guarding it. His ability to detect enemies from a greater distance can prevent costly ambushes.
• Engagement Strategy:
  1. Clear the Guards: Before attempting to destroy the cache, it is imperative to eliminate the surrounding Ottoman forces. Engage with your Pikemen forward, Crossbowmen behind.
  2. Prioritize Targets: Use Morgan's Sharpshooter Shot on high-threat units like Spahis (if present) or a heavily armored Janissary. Focus your Crossbowmen on Janissaries.
  3. Detonating Cache: Once the area is clear of enemy resistance, target the gunpowder barrels with any of your units. They are highly explosive and will detonate quickly. If timed correctly, you can lure enemy units near a cache and detonate it, causing significant area-of-effect damage to them. This is risky but can be very effective.

Weapon Cache 2 Location and Strategy

The second cache is often deeper in the caves, sometimes requiring you to take a side path. This cache is typically guarded by a stronger force, potentially including an Abus Gun.

• Enemy Composition: Expect 5-6 Janissaries, 2 Spahis, and potentially 1 Abus Gun.
• Dealing with Abus Guns: If an Abus Gun is present, it is your absolute highest priority target. Its splash damage can quickly decimate your grouped units.
  • Use Morgan Black's Sharpshooter Shot immediately on the Abus Gun.
  • Focus all Crossbowmen fire on the Abus Gun.
  • Keep your units slightly spread out if possible to minimize splash damage.
  • Engage Spahis with Pikemen, and Janissaries with Crossbowmen once the Abus Gun is down.
• Detonation: Clear the area, then destroy the cache.

Weapon Cache 3 Location and Strategy

The final weapon cache is usually located near the deepest part of the cave network, often guarding the path to Sahin's main forces. This will be the most heavily defended cache.

• Enemy Composition: Expect 6-8 Janissaries, 2-3 Spahis, and possibly 1-2 Abus Guns or an Ottoman Captain.
• Tactical Approach:
  • Reinforce: Before engaging, ensure you have called in any available Home City shipments to bolster your forces. Having a healthy, full-strength army is critical.
  • Prioritize Abus Guns/Captains: If multiple Abus Guns are present, use Morgan's Sharpshooter on one, and focus Crossbowmen on the other. Ottoman Captains are resilient but deal high damage; use Sharpshooter if Abus Guns are not present.
  • Flanking (if possible): The terrain might allow Morgan Black or a small group of Pikemen to attempt to flank enemy ranged units or artillery, disrupting their formation and drawing their fire.
  • Micro-management: Actively move damaged units out of combat range to allow Morgan's healing aura to take effect. Focus fire on one enemy unit at a time to eliminate threats efficiently.
• Detonation: Once the area is secure, destroy the final weapon cache.

Objective 2: Defeat Sahin's Forces

After all weapon caches are destroyed, the path to Sahin's main contingent will open. This is the final and most challenging confrontation of the mission. Sahin himself is not present in this mission, but his elite forces are.

The Final Confrontation Arena

The final battle usually takes place in a large, open cavern. Sahin's forces will be positioned defensively, often with ranged units at the back and melee units or cavalry at the front.

Expected Enemy Composition:

• Janissaries: 8-12 units, forming the bulk of the ranged defense.
• Spahis: 3-5 units, fast cavalry designed to flank and destroy your ranged units.
• Abus Guns: 1-2 units, providing devastating splash damage. These are the highest priority.
• Ottoman Captains: 1-2 units, powerful melee units with high health and attack.
• Ottoman Grenadiers: Occasionally 2-3 units, dealing area-of-effect damage.

Battle Strategy for Sahin's Forces

Efficient target prioritization and careful unit management are crucial for minimizing casualties and securing victory.

1. Reinforce and Heal: Before entering the final arena, ensure all your units are at full health (as much as possible with Morgan's aura) and you have called in any remaining Home City shipments. Every unit counts.
2. Battle Formation:
   • Front Line: Position your Pikemen at the very front to absorb damage and engage enemy melee units and cavalry (Spahis, Captains). They act as a shield for your more fragile ranged units.
   • Ranged Support: Place your Crossbowmen and Morgan Black directly behind the Pikemen, maintaining a safe distance to prevent them from being engaged in melee.
   • Spread Out: If you anticipate Abus Guns or Grenadiers, try to spread your units slightly to minimize splash damage, while still maintaining your defensive line.
3. Target Priority: This is the most critical aspect of the final battle.
   1. Abus Guns/Grenadiers: Always eliminate enemy artillery first. Their area-of-effect damage can quickly decimate your forces. Use Morgan's Sharpshooter and focus fire from all available Crossbowmen. If there are two, use Sharpshooter on one, and focus Crossbowmen on the other.
   2. Spahis: As soon as Spahis engage, direct all your Pikemen to attack them. Pikemen deal bonus damage to cavalry and can quickly neutralize this threat to your Crossbowmen.
   3. Ottoman Captains: These are resilient. Use Morgan's Sharpshooter if Abus Guns are down, and focus Crossbowmen fire on them after Spahis are dealt with.
   4. Janissaries: After the most dangerous threats are neutralized, focus your Crossbowmen on the Janissaries. They have good armor and attack, but are vulnerable to concentrated ranged fire.
4. Micro-management During Battle:
   • Pull Back Damaged Units: Continuously monitor your unit health. Pull heavily damaged units (especially Pikemen) out of the front line to allow Morgan's healing aura to work, or to prevent them from being overwhelmed and lost.
   • Focus Fire: Ensure your Crossbowmen are always focusing fire on a single, high-priority target until it is eliminated, rather than spreading damage across multiple enemies.
   • Morgan's Sharpshooter: Use this ability on cooldown against the highest threat.

By following these detailed strategies, maintaining careful unit management, and prioritizing your targets, you will successfully navigate the treacherous caves, destroy Sahin's weapon caches, and defeat his forces, securing victory in "Into the Caves."
