Mission 3: The Iron Horse
Objectives: Build the Transcontinental Railroad, Defeat the Circle of Ossus.
Welcome to the climactic third mission of the campaign, "The Iron Horse." This mission presents a significant challenge, demanding superior multitasking, strategic base management, and effective unit composition. You will be tasked with constructing vital sections of the Transcontinental Railroad across a vast map while simultaneously defending against relentless and increasingly powerful assaults from the Circle of Ossus. Success hinges on establishing a robust economy, maintaining strong defenses, and leveraging your Home City shipments effectively.
Mission Briefing & Starting Conditions
You begin this mission with a modest starting force and a pre-established Town Center. Your initial units typically include:
- 1 Explorer (often Amelia Black)
- 6-8 Villagers
- A small contingent of military units (e.g., 3-4 Musketeers, 2-3 Hussars)
- A few starting resources (e.g., 500 Food, 500 Wood, 300 Coin)
The map is expansive, featuring multiple resource nodes and strategic choke points. Your primary objective is to construct several segments of the Transcontinental Railroad, which will progressively unlock new areas and advance the mission. The Circle of Ossus will establish multiple forward operating bases and launch attacks from various directions.
Recommended Home City Cards
Selecting the right Home City cards is crucial for this mission's success. Prioritize cards that enhance your economy, provide powerful military shipments, or offer defensive bonuses. Here are some highly recommended cards:
- Economic Cards:
- 3 Villagers / 4 Villagers: Essential for rapidly boosting your economy. Ship these early and often.
- Economic Theory: Increases resource gathering rates.
- Advanced Market: Improves market buy/sell rates, useful for resource balancing.
- Sustainable Agriculture / Sustainable Lumbering / Sustainable Mining: Boosts specific resource gathering, tailor to your needs.
- Military Cards:
- Musketeer/Hussar/Dragoon Shipments: Direct unit shipments are invaluable for reinforcing your defenses or pushing offensives.
- Advanced Artillery (e.g., Heavy Cannon Shipment): Crucial for breaking through enemy fortifications and dealing with large enemy formations.
- Ironclads (if available): While not always directly applicable to land combat, their powerful siege capabilities can be devastating if you can get them into position on any navigable waterways.
- Fortress/Factory Wagon: Allows you to establish new defensive positions or boost resource production in forward bases.
- Defensive Cards:
- Town Center Wagon: Allows you to establish additional Town Centers, providing more build queues and population capacity.
- Outpost Wagon: Quick defensive structures for protecting railroad segments.
- Advanced Defenses: Boosts HP and attack of defensive structures.
Phase 1: Establishing Your Foothold & First Railroad Segment
- Initial Setup: Immediately task all your starting Villagers to gather resources. Focus on Food and Wood to train more Villagers and construct essential buildings. Build a House, a Barracks, and a Market.
- Scouting: Use your Explorer to scout the immediate area around your Town Center. Identify resource nodes (mines, forests, huntables) and potential choke points for defense. Be wary of early Circle of Ossus patrols.
- Economic Boom: Prioritize training Villagers until you have at least 20-25. Allocate them efficiently: roughly 10-12 on Food, 8-10 on Wood, and 5-7 on Coin.
- First Railroad Segment: You will be prompted to build the first section of the railroad. Send a group of Villagers (5-7) to the designated construction site. Assign a small military escort (e.g., 5 Musketeers) to protect them, as the Circle will likely launch probing attacks.
- Early Defenses: Construct a few Outposts or Blockhouses near your main base and around the railroad construction site. Upgrade your Town Center defenses.
Phase 2: Expanding & Defending Multiple Fronts
As you complete railroad segments, the map will expand, and new construction sites will appear. The Circle of Ossus attacks will intensify.
- Forward Bases: For each new railroad segment, consider establishing a forward operating base. This doesn't need to be a full Town Center initially; a Blockhouse or Outpost with a few Villagers gathering local resources can suffice. This reduces travel time for construction and allows for quicker defense.
- Circle of Ossus Attack Compositions: The Circle of Ossus will employ several units. Expect the following typical compositions:
- Early Attacks: Primarily Light Infantry (e.g., Pikemen, Crossbowmen) and some Cavalry (e.g., Hussars). Counter with Musketeers and a few Dragoons.
- Mid-Game Attacks: More balanced forces, including Heavy Infantry (e.g., Grenadiers), Cavalry (e.g., Cuirassiers), and early Artillery (e.g., Falconets). You'll need a diverse army of Musketeers, Dragoons, and Cannons.
- Late-Game Attacks: Powerful combinations of Elite Infantry (e.g., Imperial Grenadiers), Heavy Cavalry (e.g., Imperial Cuirassiers), and advanced Siege Artillery (e.g., Heavy Cannons, Mortars). They may also field unique units like Spies or Agents. Counter with a strong core of Musketeers, a significant number of Dragoons to deal with their cavalry and artillery, and your own Heavy Cannons for siege defense and offense.
- Army Composition: Maintain a balanced army. A good general composition is 40-50% Infantry (Musketeers, Grenadiers), 30-40% Cavalry (Hussars, Dragoons), and 10-20% Artillery (Falconets, Heavy Cannons). Dragoons are particularly effective against the Circle's often cavalry-heavy forces and their artillery.
- Resource Management: As you expand, ensure you have multiple Villagers on each resource type. Trade routes and Native American alliances can provide additional resources. Don't neglect upgrading your resource gathering technologies at the Market.
- Hero Management: Amelia Black is a powerful unit. Use her to scout, collect treasures, and assist in defending key areas. Her special abilities can turn the tide of smaller engagements.
Phase 3: The Final Push & Destroying the Circle's Stronghold
Once all railroad segments are complete, your final objective will be revealed: destroy the main Circle of Ossus stronghold. This will typically be located in a heavily fortified area of the map.
- Consolidate Forces: Before launching your final assault, gather your entire army. Ship in any remaining military cards from your Home City. Ensure you have a strong siege component (at least 4-6 Heavy Cannons).
- Siege Warfare: The Circle's stronghold will be protected by walls, towers, and numerous defensive structures. Use your Heavy Cannons to systematically dismantle these defenses. Protect your artillery with infantry and cavalry.
- Flanking Maneuvers: Look for opportunities to flank the enemy's main defensive line. Dragoons are excellent for raiding their backlines and eliminating their artillery or ranged units.
- Target Priority: Focus fire on key enemy buildings like Barracks, Stables, and their Town Center to cripple their unit production. Eliminate enemy artillery first, as it poses the greatest threat to your siege units.
- Persistence: The final stronghold will be heavily defended, and the Circle will continuously train new units. Be prepared for a drawn-out battle. Replenish your forces using Home City shipments and your own production buildings.
Map-Specific Tips
- Native American Settlements: Seek out and ally with Native American settlements on the map. Their unique units and technologies can provide a significant advantage. For instance, Lakota Dog Soldiers are excellent light cavalry, and their technologies can boost unit HP or resource gathering.
- Trade Routes: Establish Trade Posts along the trade route to generate a steady stream of experience points and resources. Protect these posts, as the Circle will often attempt to destroy them.
- Treasures: Keep your Explorer active, collecting treasures across the map. These often provide small resource boosts, experience, or even a few free units.
- Terrain: use the terrain to your advantage. Place defensive structures on high ground for better line of sight and defensive bonuses. Use natural choke points to funnel enemy attacks.
This mission is a true test of your strategic prowess in Age of Empires III. By carefully managing your economy, building strong defenses, and deploying a balanced and powerful army, you will successfully complete the Transcontinental Railroad and defeat the Circle of Ossus.
