Military Buildings
Military buildings are the backbone of your armed forces in Age of Empires III, serving as the primary production hubs for all combat units and the research centers for crucial military upgrades. Strategic placement and efficient management of these structures are paramount to securing victory on the battlefield.
Standard Military Production Buildings
Every civilization has access to a core set of military buildings designed to produce specific unit types. Building multiple copies of these structures allows for simultaneous unit training, significantly increasing your army's production rate and enabling you to quickly reinforce your forces or overwhelm opponents.
- Barracks: This fundamental building is where you train all your infantry units. From basic Musketeers and Pikemen to specialized skirmishers, the Barracks is essential for establishing a strong ground presence. Upgrades available here often focus on infantry attack, health, and defensive capabilities.
- Stables: Cavalry units, known for their speed and powerful charges, are trained at the Stables. Dragoons, Hussars, and other mounted units provide excellent mobility and can quickly exploit enemy weaknesses or raid economic targets. Stables offer upgrades to cavalry attack, health, and movement speed.
- Artillery Foundry: As you advance through the ages, the Artillery Foundry becomes vital for producing powerful siege weapons and artillery. Cannons, Mortars, and Falconets can decimate enemy fortifications, clear out large groups of units, and provide crucial fire support. Upgrades here typically enhance artillery damage, range, and health.
- Dock: For maps featuring water, the Dock is your naval military building. It allows you to construct various warships, from nimble Galleons to formidable Frigates, essential for controlling sea lanes, transporting units, and bombarding coastal defenses. Naval upgrades improve ship attack, armor, and sometimes speed.
Unique Military Buildings and Defensive Structures
Beyond the standard buildings, many civilizations boast unique military structures that offer distinct advantages, often combining unit production with defensive capabilities. These structures are integral to a civilization's playstyle and can significantly impact early game defense and offensive pushes.
- Blockhouse (Russians): The Russian Blockhouse is a versatile structure that functions as both a Barracks and a defensive tower. It can train Russian infantry units like Strelets and Cossacks, while also providing garrison points for villagers or military units, allowing them to fire arrows at approaching enemies. This dual functionality makes it an excellent forward defensive position or a strong anchor for early expansions, providing immediate unit production alongside crucial early-game protection. Its defensive capabilities are often superior to a standard outpost.
- War Hut (Native American Civilizations): Native American civilizations utilize the War Hut, which serves as their primary military production building. Similar to a Barracks, it trains their unique infantry and some light cavalry units. However, War Huts also possess inherent defensive capabilities, able to fire arrows at nearby enemies. While not as heavily armored as a Blockhouse, their ability to produce units and defend simultaneously makes them crucial for establishing and holding territory.
- Fort (All Civilizations, via Home City Shipments): While not built directly by villagers, the Fort is a powerful defensive and offensive structure obtainable through Home City shipments. Once placed, it acts as a formidable defensive strongpoint, capable of garrisoning numerous units and firing powerful cannon shots at enemies. Additionally, Forts can train a limited selection of advanced military units, making them excellent staging points for assaults or resilient defensive anchors. They are significantly more robust and powerful than any other defensive structure.
- Outpost (All Civilizations): Though primarily a defensive structure, Outposts are worth mentioning in the context of military strategy. They provide early warning and can fire arrows at enemies. While they don't produce units, their ability to be upgraded with technologies like "Advanced Outposts" (increasing their health and attack) makes them valuable for protecting resource gathering operations or funneling enemy attacks.
Military Upgrades and Research
Each military building serves as a research center for specific upgrades that enhance the combat effectiveness of your units. These upgrades are categorized and crucial for maintaining a competitive edge throughout the game:
- Attack Upgrades: Increase the damage output of units trained from that building. For example, Barracks will have upgrades for infantry attack, Stables for cavalry attack, and so on.
- Defense/Health Upgrades: Improve the hit points or defensive armor of units, making them more resilient in combat.
- Speed/Movement Upgrades: Enhance the movement speed of units, allowing for faster deployment, flanking maneuvers, and retreat.
- Specialized Upgrades: Many buildings offer unique upgrades that unlock new abilities, improve specific unit types (e.g., "Heavy Infantry" upgrades), or reduce training times.
Regularly investing in these upgrades is critical. A fully upgraded army can often defeat a larger, un-upgraded force, highlighting the importance of balancing unit production with technological advancement.
