Economy Management by Age
Mastering your economy is paramount to victory in Age of Empires III. Each age presents unique challenges and opportunities for resource gathering and management. This detailed guide will walk you through optimal economic strategies for each stage of the game.
I. Discovery Age (Age 1)
The Discovery Age is all about rapid expansion and setting up a sustainable resource base. Your initial actions dictate your early game strength.
- Initial Villager Production: Immediately queue up Villagers from your Town Center. Continuous Villager production is the single most important economic factor throughout the game.
- Resource Prioritization:
- Food: Your primary focus. Send your starting Villagers to hunt nearby animals (Deer, Bison, Turkey). Hunting provides the fastest food gathering rate.
- Wood: Assign 2-3 Villagers to gather wood to construct essential buildings.
- Building Order:
- House: Build your first House as soon as you have 20 Wood to avoid being population capped. Place it strategically to provide line of sight or to wall off an area.
- Trading Post: If a Trade Route is nearby, send your Explorer to build a Trading Post on a Trade Route node. This provides a steady trickle of XP and resources, crucial for early Home City shipments.
- Exploration: Use your Explorer to scout for treasure, additional huntable animals, and the locations of enemy Town Centers. Treasures often provide valuable early resources or XP.
- Home City Shipments: Your first shipment should almost always be 3 Villagers to accelerate your economy.
II. Colonial Age (Age 2)
The Colonial Age introduces military units and more advanced economic options. Balancing military production with economic growth is key.
- Villager Distribution: Aim for a 60-70% Food, 20-25% Wood, and 5-10% Coin distribution. You'll need more coin for military units and upgrades.
- Economic Buildings:
- Mill: Once huntable animals near your Town Center are depleted, transition Villagers to farming by building Mills. Research the "Plough" upgrade (200 Food, 200 Wood) at the Mill to increase farm gathering rates.
- Plantation: For a steady gold income, build Plantations. Research "Coinage" (200 Food, 200 Coin) and "Banking" (300 Food, 300 Coin) at the Plantation to boost gathering rates.
- Market: Construct a Market (100 Wood) to research economic upgrades. Prioritize "Hunting Dogs" (100 Food, 100 Coin) for faster hunting and "Logging Camp" (100 Food, 100 Coin) for improved wood gathering.
- Trading Post Expansion: Continue building Trading Posts on Trade Routes for sustained resource income and XP. Consider sending a Home City shipment of a "Wagon" to quickly establish a new Trading Post.
- Home City Shipments: Depending on your strategy, consider shipments like "700 Food," "700 Wood," or "700 Coin" to boost your economy, or "4 Villagers" to further increase your population.
III. Fortress Age (Age 3)
The Fortress Age is where your economy needs to support a larger, more powerful army and advanced technologies. Efficiency is paramount.
- Resource Focus: Coin becomes increasingly important for advanced units and upgrades. Adjust your Villager distribution accordingly, often shifting more to Plantations or Mines.
- Advanced Economic Upgrades:
- Market: Research "Steel Traps" (300 Food, 300 Coin) for hunting, "Sawmill" (300 Food, 300 Coin) for wood, and "Gold Mining" (300 Food, 300 Coin) for coin. These are significant boosts to your economy.
- Town Center: Research "Town Center Upgrades" to increase Villager production speed.
- Banks (European Civilizations): If playing as a European civilization, construct Banks (400 Wood, 400 Coin) to generate a passive income of Coin. These are incredibly powerful for late-game economies.
- Factories (Home City Card): If you have the "Factory" Home City card available, send it as soon as possible. Factories generate a continuous stream of either Food, Wood, or Coin, providing a massive economic advantage.
- Native American Allies: If allied with Native American tribes, research their economic upgrades at the Trading Post. These can provide unique resource bonuses or gathering rate improvements.
IV. Industrial Age (Age 4)
The Industrial Age is the endgame, requiring a robust economy to sustain powerful armies, expensive upgrades, and potentially multiple Factories.
- Maximized Resource Gathering: Ensure all available resource nodes are being exploited. Build additional Mills, Plantations, and Lumber Camps as needed.
- Factory Management: If you have multiple Factories, ensure they are producing the resource you are most in need of at any given moment. Switch their production as your needs change.
- Trade Route Optimization: Upgrade your Trading Posts on Trade Routes to maximize their resource output. Consider sending "Trade Route Upgrades" from your Home City.
- Home City Shipments: Focus on shipments that provide large sums of resources (e.g., "1000 Food," "1000 Wood," "1000 Coin") or powerful economic units like additional "Factories."
- Resource Conversion: Use the Market to convert surplus resources into needed ones, though be mindful of the exchange rates. This is a last resort, as it's inefficient.
