Post-Imperial Age Strategies
Reaching the Imperial Age (Age IV) in Age of Empires III is a significant milestone, but it's far from the end of the game. This stage demands a refined approach to resource management, military composition, and strategic objectives to secure victory. The game often shifts from aggressive expansion to sustained pressure and decisive engagements.
Resource Management in Late Game
By Imperial Age, your economy should be booming, but efficiency is key. Depleted natural resources are a common challenge, requiring proactive solutions.
- Gold:
- Trade Routes: Maximize your income from Trade Routes. Build Trading Posts along the entire route, upgrading them with the "Trade Route Upgrades" available from your Home City shipments or directly from the Trading Post itself. Consider sending cards like "Improved Trade Route" or "Advanced Trade Route" if available for your civilization.
- Banks/Plantations: For European civilizations, establish multiple Banks (from the Town Center) and Plantations (from the Mill). Upgrade their gather rates via the Mill and Home City cards. Native American civilizations should focus on their unique resource generation buildings and technologies.
- Factories: If you have access to Factories (often through Home City shipments or specific civilization bonuses), prioritize their construction and set them to generate Gold. These are invaluable for a steady, high-volume income.
- Food & Wood:
- Farms/Plantations: Transition all villagers from hunting/gathering to Farms (from the Mill) and Plantations (for coin, but also consider for food if your civ allows). Research all available gathering upgrades at the Mill.
- Lumber Camps: Ensure you have multiple Lumber Camps strategically placed near remaining forests. Research all woodcutting upgrades at the Lumber Camp.
- Home City Shipments: Utilize Home City shipments for large resource drops if your economy is struggling or you need a quick boost for a critical unit production.
Advanced Military Composition & Upgrades
Imperial Age battles are won by superior unit combinations, fully upgraded units, and effective counter-play.
- Full Upgrades are Non-Negotiable:
- Barracks, Stables, Artillery Foundry: Research ALL available unit upgrades for attack, health, and armor at these buildings. This includes "Veteran," "Guard," and "Imperial" upgrades for your core units.
- Blacksmith: Ensure all Blacksmith upgrades for infantry, cavalry, and artillery are completed.
- Church/Mosque/Temple: Research any unique military upgrades or economic bonuses offered by your religious building.
- Diverse Army Composition: Avoid relying on a single unit type. A balanced army is crucial for countering various enemy threats.
- Infantry: Include a mix of ranged (Musketeers, Skirmishers) and melee (Pikemen, Halberdiers) units. Skirmishers are excellent against heavy infantry and cavalry, while Pikemen counter cavalry effectively.
- Cavalry: Light Cavalry (Hussars, Dragoons) for raiding and artillery sniping, and Heavy Cavalry (Cuirassiers, Lancers) for frontline engagements and breaking formations.
- Artillery: Essential for siege and area-of-effect damage.
- Culverins: Prioritize these for countering enemy artillery.
- Falconets/Heavy Cannons: For anti-personnel and siege damage.
- Mortars: Specifically for destroying buildings and defenses from a distance.
- Unique Units: Leverage your civilization's unique units, as they often have powerful bonuses or specific roles that can turn the tide of battle. For example, British Longbowmen or Ottoman Janissaries.
- Home City Shipments: Continue to send military shipments that provide powerful unit batches, upgrades, or unique mercenary units. Cards like "Advanced Artillery" or "Imperial Guard" can be game-changers.
Strategic Objectives & Map Control
In the Imperial Age, the focus shifts to maintaining map control, denying resources to your opponent, and pushing for a decisive victory.
- Map Control:
- Outposts/Forts: Build Outposts and Forts at strategic choke points, near enemy trade routes, or to protect your own resource gathering operations. Upgrade them with "Advanced Defenses" from the Home City.
- Scouting: Keep explorers and light cavalry actively scouting to monitor enemy movements, resource gathering, and base expansions.
- Economic Warfare:
- Raid Enemy Economy: Use fast cavalry (Hussars, Dragoons) or stealthy units to constantly harass enemy villagers, disrupt their resource gathering, and destroy their economic buildings (Mills, Plantations, Trading Posts).
- Destroy Trade Routes: Target enemy Trading Posts and their associated trade units to cripple their gold income.
- Siege Warfare:
- Push with Artillery: Once you have a strong army, use Mortars and Heavy Cannons to systematically dismantle enemy defenses (Walls, Towers, Forts) and production buildings.
- Combined Arms Push: Advance your infantry and cavalry alongside your artillery to protect them from enemy counter-attacks.
- Wonder Victory (if applicable): If playing a game mode that allows it, constructing and defending a Wonder can be a viable late-game strategy, especially if you have a strong economy and defensive capabilities.
- Naval Dominance: On water maps, maintaining a powerful navy is crucial. Build Ironclads and Frigates, and research all naval upgrades at the Dock to control fishing spots and coastal areas.
