Multiplayer Etiquette and Communication
Engaging in multiplayer battles in Age of Empires III can be one of the most rewarding experiences the game offers, but it relies heavily on effective communication and good sportsmanship. Whether you're playing a 1v1 ranked match on the Great Plains or a 4v4 team game on Caribbean, understanding and practicing proper etiquette will enhance your own enjoyment and that of your fellow players.
Pre-Game Lobby and Setup
- Greeting Your Opponents/Teammates: A simple "gl hf" (good luck, have fun) in the chat upon entering the lobby or at the start of the game sets a positive tone.
- Map Selection and Rules: If you're hosting, clearly state the map (e.g., Texas, New England), game mode (Supremacy, Deathmatch, Treaty), and any custom rules (e.g., no rush, specific unit limits) before starting. For team games, discuss team compositions and strategies.
- Civilization Selection: Avoid last-second civilization changes without prior discussion in team games, as this can disrupt team synergy. If you have a preferred role (e.g., booming, rushing), communicate it.
- Connection Check: If you notice lag or desynchronization issues before the game starts, politely bring it up. It's better to address it early than to have a game ruined mid-match.
In-Game Communication (Team Games)
Effective communication is paramount in team games. Utilize the in-game chat (Enter key) and the ping system (Alt + Left Click on the minimap or terrain) to convey vital information.
- Early Game Strategy:
- Resource Sharing: Discuss who will send Resource Wagons or Trade Route cards to whom, especially if one player is aiming for a fast Imperial Age.
- Scouting Information: Share enemy base locations, early unit movements (e.g., "enemy sending Cossacks to my base"), and potential rush timings.
- Attack Plans: Coordinate early attacks. For example, "I'm going to rush with Musketeers at 6:00, can you support with Hussars?"
- Mid to Late Game Coordination:
- Targeting Priorities: Identify enemy weaknesses or key buildings. "Focus fire on their Artillery Foundry" or "Let's take out their Factories."
- Defensive Calls: Alert teammates to incoming attacks. "Need help at my north wall, they have Culverins."
- Home City Shipments: Announce important shipments you're sending, especially if they are for the team (e.g., "Sending Advanced Market for team").
- Resource Requests: Don't be afraid to ask for resources if you're low and need to produce critical units. "Can anyone send me 200 food for Skirmishers?"
- Ping System: Use pings strategically. One or two pings to draw attention to an enemy army, a resource node, or a target building is effective. Spamming pings is disruptive and unhelpful.
General Etiquette
- Avoid "GG Early": Don't declare "gg" (good game) prematurely, especially in team games. The tide of battle can turn quickly, and it can be demoralizing for your teammates.
- No Taunting or Flaming: Keep the chat respectful. Avoid insults, excessive "ez" (easy) comments, or personal attacks. This applies to both winning and losing.
- Sportsmanship in Defeat: If you're losing, a simple "gg" at the end is appropriate. Avoid rage-quitting without a word, as it can leave your teammates in a difficult position.
- Respect Treaty Timers: If playing a Treaty game, respect the agreed-upon non-aggression period. Attacking before the timer expires is considered extremely poor form.
- Reporting Misconduct: If you encounter players who are consistently abusive or engaging in clearly unfair play (e.g., hacking), utilize the in-game reporting features.
- Learning from Mistakes: Don't be afraid to ask for advice or acknowledge a good play by an opponent. This fosters a positive learning environment.
By adhering to these guidelines, you'll contribute to a more enjoyable and competitive Age of Empires III multiplayer community, fostering better games and potentially making new allies along the way.
