Effective combat micro-management is the differentiator between a stalemate and a decisive victory. In Age of Empires IV, mastering the nuances of unit control allows you to maximize damage output while minimizing attrition, enabling smaller, well-managed forces to overcome numerically superior armies through superior positioning and ability usage.
Core Micro-Management Techniques
- Kiting with Ranged Units: Essential for Archers and Crossbowmen. Fire a volley, then immediately issue a move command away from the approaching enemy during the attack cooldown. This maintains distance and keeps your glass-cannon units alive. For Mongol players, the Mangudai can fire while moving, making them the ultimate kiting unit—always circle the enemy to prevent being cornered.
- Focus Fire and Overkill Prevention: Do not let your units auto-attack the nearest target. Manually right-click high-value targets (like Crossbowmen against heavy armor or Monks). However, avoid "overkill" by not tasking 50 archers to hit a single low-hp Spearman; split your army into control groups to distribute damage efficiently.
- The Spearman Brace: When facing a cavalry charge, do not move your Spearmen at the last second. By standing still (or using the "Stand Ground" command), Spearmen will automatically Brace, stunning the charging cavalry and dealing massive impact damage.
- Cavalry Flanking and Spacing: Use the Staggered Formation (shortcut: V) for your cavalry when approaching Mangonels to minimize splash damage. Once engaged, use your mobility to cycle-charge: hit the enemy, pull back, and re-engage to trigger the charge damage bonus again.
Reacting to Enemy Compositions
Success depends on your ability to react to the enemy’s specific unit mix using active formations and ability triggers:
- Against Massed Archers: Utilize the Line Formation for your Men-at-Arms to create a wide front, forcing the enemy to spread their fire. If using Knights, use the "Line" formation to ensure as many horses as possible connect with the archers simultaneously, preventing them from being picked off one-on-one.
- Against Siege Weapons: When a Mangonel or Nest of Bees fires, immediately switch your infanty to Spread Formation. Use "Stop" (shortcut: S) suddenly to bait a siege shot, then move units out of the projected landing zone.
- Using Unit Abilities: Always keep an eye on active cooldowns. Use the English Longbowmen's Setup Camp for healing during lulls, or the Delhi Sultanate's Forced March to close the gap between your infantry and retreating ranged units.
Maximizing Combat Efficiency
To minimize losses, rotate wounded units to the back of your formation. In AoE4, a unit with 1 HP deals the same damage as one with full HP; by retreating "red-hp" units while your fresh frontline absorbs the hits, you maintain your army's total DPS (Damage Per Second) for longer. Against heavy compositions like French Royal Knights, utilize Crossbowmen and focus fire on the front-most knight to break their momentum, then use your own light cavalry to dive their backline once the "meat shield" is thinned.
