Team Games Strategy
Team games in Age of Empires IV present a dynamic and often more complex challenge than 1v1 engagements. Success hinges not just on individual skill, but on coordinated strategy, effective communication, and understanding complementary strengths. This guide will walk you through essential steps to dominate the battlefield alongside your allies.
Pre-Game Coordination: The Foundation of Victory
Before the first villager is even tasked, a solid pre-game plan is crucial. Use the lobby chat or external voice communication to establish roles and initial strategies.
- Civilization Synergy: Discuss which civilizations each player will pick. Aim for a balanced team composition. For example:
- One player focusing on a strong early game rush (e.g., Mongols, Rus).
- Another on a booming economy and late-game power (e.g., Abbasid Dynasty, Delhi Sultanate).
- A third on defensive capabilities and siege (e.g., Holy Roman Empire, English).
- Map Control & Resource Distribution: Identify key resource locations (Sacred Sites, Gold Veins, Stone Deposits) and discuss who will secure which areas. Often, You with the strongest early military presence should aim to control the center.
- Opening Strategy: Decide on initial build orders and whether to execute an early coordinated attack (e.g., a "two-man dark age rush" or "Feudal aggression").
Early Game: Establishing Presence and Economy
The early game sets the stage for the entire match. Focus on efficient resource gathering and scouting.
- Scouting: Designate one or two players to aggressively scout the entire map, especially enemy positions and neutral resources. Share this information immediately. Use your starting Scout to locate sheep and potential enemy forward bases.
- Resource Sharing: Utilize the Market to trade excess resources. If one player is struggling with a specific resource, others can often assist. For instance, if a teammate is going for a fast Castle Age and needs extra Gold, another player with a strong Wood income can trade for it.
- Early Defense & Wall-offs: If an enemy rush is anticipated, coordinate defensive structures. A well-placed Outpost or Palisade Wall can deter early aggression. Consider walling off shared resource patches or chokepoints.
Mid Game: Coordinated Attacks and Defense
This is where team strategy truly shines. Individual actions have a magnified impact when coordinated.
- Pincer Movements: When attacking, avoid sending all units down a single path. Coordinate simultaneous attacks from multiple angles to split enemy attention and defenses. For example, one player attacks the front while another flanks with cavalry.
- Unit Composition: Discuss unit counters. If an enemy is spamming Spearmen, a teammate can mass Archers or Mangonels. Avoid having multiple players building the exact same unit composition if it leaves your team vulnerable.
- Siege Support: When pushing into an enemy base, ensure adequate siege support. Battering Rams are excellent for early pushes, while Trebuchets and Bombards become vital in the later stages. Protect these valuable units with melee infantry.
- Sacred Site Control: Capturing and holding Sacred Sites provides a steady stream of Gold, which can be a significant advantage. Coordinate with a teammate to secure and defend these locations, especially if going for a Sacred Victory.
- Relic Collection: Send Monks to collect Relics from neutral Monasteries. These provide a passive Gold income and can be garrisoned in a Monastery for even greater effect. Designate one player to focus on this if their civilization has strong Monk bonuses (e.g., Holy Roman Empire).
Late Game: Power Spikes and Victory Conditions
As the game progresses, focus on leveraging your team's strengths to achieve victory.
- Wonder Race: If an enemy team is building a Wonder, immediately coordinate a full-scale assault. Wonders are expensive and take a long time to build, making them a vulnerable target.
- Shared Vision: Utilize observation posts and forward bases to maintain shared vision of the enemy. This allows for better decision-making and quicker reactions to enemy movements.
- Resource Dumps: If one player is floating a large amount of a specific resource, encourage them to "dump" it into military production for a coordinated push, or to upgrade technologies that benefit the entire team.
- Communication is Key: Continually communicate enemy unit compositions, attack timings, and defensive weak points. Use pings effectively to draw attention to specific areas on the map.
