A strong economy is the bedrock of any successful empire. To transition from a basic build order to a dominant late-game powerhouse, you must master map-wide resource acquisition and high-value objectives.
Maximizing Trade Routes
In the late game, Gold mines will inevitably deplete. Establish trade routes early by building Traders at your Market and sending them to Neutral or Allied Markets. For maximum efficiency, place your Markets as far as possible from the target trade post; the Gold rewarded scales based on the direct distance traveled. Protect these routes with Outposts or Walls, as a single raid can collapse your late-game production.
Relic Prioritization and Sacred Sites
Upon reaching the Castle Age (III), your Monks or specialized religious units should immediately secure Relics. Placing a Relic inside a Monastery provides a perpetual stream of passive Gold that does not exhaust. If playing as the Holy Roman Empire or Regnitz Cathedral, this income is significantly amplified. Additionally, capturing Sacred Sites provides a steady Gold tick and forces your opponent to move out of their base to contest the timer.
High-Tier Gathering Upgrades
Efficiency is determined by your gathering rate versus the distance traveled. Prioritize the second and third tiers of gathering upgrades (such as 'Crosscut Saw' or 'Large Scale Agriculture') at your Lumber Camps and Mills only once your villager count exceeds 50; otherwise, the initial resource investment outweighs the immediate return. Always research 'Wheelbarrow' as early as feasible to reduce walking time and increase carrying capacity across all resources.
Late-Game Farm Transitions
When natural food sources like Deer and Berries are exhausted, transition to a "Farm Transition." Build your Mills centrally and surround them with 8 Farms to minimize Villager movement. By Age IV, ensure you have researched 'Enclosure' or equivalent technologies to ensure your food production sustains a constant 200/200 unit population.
