Campaign Achievements & Challenges
Beyond simply completing the historical campaigns in Age of Empires IV, a wealth of challenging achievements awaits dedicated players. These often require specific strategies, precise timing, and a deep understanding of each civilization's unique strengths. This section details some of the most intricate campaign achievements and provides actionable walkthroughs to secure them.
The Norman Campaign: The Battle of Hastings - "William's Gambit"
Achievement Goal: Win The Battle of Hastings mission without constructing any additional Barracks or Archery Ranges after the initial ones provided.
Strategy Overview: This achievement forces you to maximize the efficiency of your starting military production and rely heavily on your early-game units and the powerful Norman unique units. Resource management and defensive positioning are key.
- Early Game (First 10 minutes):
- Immediately queue up Spearmen and Archers from your starting Barracks and Archery Range. Focus on a 2:1 ratio of Spearmen to Archers initially to counter early English Man-at-Arms pushes.
- Prioritize gathering Wood and Food. Send 4-5 Villagers to Wood and 6-7 to Food (sheep and berries first).
- Establish a strong defensive line around your Town Center using your initial palisade walls and any natural choke points. Place your Archers behind Spearmen.
- Scout aggressively with your starting Scout to locate additional sheep and identify enemy patrol routes.
- Mid Game (10-25 minutes):
- Transition to Gold and Stone mining. You'll need Gold for upgrades and Stone for defensive structures.
- Research Infantry Melee Armor and Ranged Attack upgrades at the Blacksmith as soon as resources allow. These are crucial for unit longevity.
- Begin producing Knights from your Stable. Knights are essential for flanking maneuvers and breaking enemy formations. Aim for at least 5-7 Knights.
- Utilize your unique Norman unit, the Longbowman (if available through a landmark or early technology), for their superior range and damage against enemy infantry.
- Constantly reinforce your front lines. Do not let your unit count drop too low, as the English will launch continuous assaults.
- Consider building a Siege Workshop to produce a Battering Ram or two. These are invaluable for pushing through enemy palisades or even the final English Keep if the opportunity arises.
- Late Game (25+ minutes & Final Push):
- Once you have a solid force of Spearmen, Archers, and Knights, begin to slowly push towards the English Town Center.
- Use your Knights to flank and target enemy Archers or Siege units.
- Focus fire with your Archers on high-priority targets like English Longbowmen or Man-at-Arms.
- If you built Battering Rams, use them to destroy enemy production buildings or the Town Center directly.
- The key is attrition. Keep your units alive through careful micro-management and retreat damaged units when necessary. Do not engage in suicidal charges.
- The final objective is to destroy the English Town Center. Concentrate all available forces on this structure once the surrounding defenses are neutralized.
The Rus Campaign: The Battle on the Ice - "Frozen Fury"
Achievement Goal: Complete The Battle on the Ice mission without losing any Monks.
Strategy Overview: This achievement demands meticulous protection of your Monks, who are vital for healing and converting enemy units. Their vulnerability makes this a high-stress challenge.
- Monk Protection Protocol:
- Assign your Monks to a dedicated control group (e.g., '3' or '4').
- Always keep Monks behind your main line of melee units (Spearmen, Knights). They should never be on the front lines.
- Utilize the Heal ability constantly. Prioritize healing your most valuable or heavily damaged units.
- Be extremely cautious with Conversion. Only attempt conversions on isolated enemy units or when you have overwhelming military superiority to protect the Monk during the channel time. Avoid converting powerful units like Knights if it puts your Monk at risk.
- If enemy cavalry or fast units break through your lines, immediately retreat your Monks to a safer position, even if it means pulling them back to your Town Center.
- Build Outposts or Keeps strategically to provide defensive cover and garrison options for your Monks if they are under direct threat.
- Unit Composition & Tactics:
- Focus on a balanced army with a strong core of Spearmen to counter enemy cavalry and Knights for offensive power and flanking.
- Archer units are crucial for ranged damage and thinning out enemy numbers before they reach your melee line.
- The Rus unique unit, the Warrior Monk, can be invaluable here. While they are combat units, their healing aura can benefit your other Monks and frontline troops. However, do not rely on them as your sole Monk protection.
- When engaging enemy forces on the ice, be mindful of the cracking ice mechanic. Do not send your Monks onto thin ice unless absolutely necessary and ensure they can retreat quickly.
- Use your Scouts to lure smaller enemy groups away from your main force, allowing you to deal with them piecemeal and reduce the overall threat to your Monks.
- Key Moments:
- During the initial engagements, keep your Monks well behind your Spearmen.
- When pushing towards the Teutonic Knights' encampment, clear out all enemy patrols and defensive structures before allowing your Monks to advance.
- In the final confrontation on the ice, position your Monks on the safest, thickest ice possible, and use your military to create a protective screen around them. Retreat them immediately if the battle turns against you.
