Campaign Mission Guides (General)

Welcome, aspiring conqueror, to the comprehensive guide for navigating the challenging and rewarding campaigns of Age of Empires IV! This section provides general strategies and actionable steps applicable across many missions, helping you establish dominance and achieve victory.

Early Game Domination: The First 10 Minutes

The initial phase of any campaign mission is crucial. A strong start sets the foundation for your entire economy and military.

  • Scouting is Key: Immediately send your starting Scout unit to explore the immediate vicinity of your Town Center. Prioritize locating:

    • Sheep/Boar: These are your primary early food sources. Herd sheep back to your Town Center for efficient gathering. For boar, lure them with a single Villager, then have your other Villagers attack.
    • Gold Veins & Stone Deposits: Identify at least one accessible gold and stone source for future resource gathering.
    • Sacred Sites/Relics: If the mission objectives involve these, locate them early to plan your expansion.
    • Enemy Outposts/Villages: Knowing enemy positions helps you anticipate early aggression.
  • Villager Production & Resource Allocation:

    • Continuously produce Villagers from your Town Center. Aim to have at least 6-8 Villagers on food (sheep/boar) and 3-4 on wood initially.
    • Once food is stable, allocate 2-3 Villagers to gold to prepare for Age II advancements.
  • Essential Early Buildings:

    • Lumber Camp: Build near dense forests.
    • Mining Camp: Build near gold and stone deposits.
    • Mill: Build near berry bushes or farms (once researched).
    • House: Ensure you never hit your population cap. Build houses proactively.

Mid-Game Expansion & Defense

As you transition into the Feudal Age (Age II) and Castle Age (Age III), your focus shifts to expanding your economy and securing your borders.

  • Technology Upgrades: Prioritize economic upgrades at your Town Center, Mill, Lumber Camp, and Mining Camp. Key upgrades include:

    • Wheelbarrow (Town Center): Significantly increases Villager carry capacity and movement speed.
    • Double-Bit Axe (Lumber Camp): Boosts wood gathering rate.
    • Stone Mining (Mining Camp): Increases stone gathering rate.
    • Farm Upgrades (Mill): Improves farm yield.
  • Military Production & Composition:

    • Identify the enemy's primary unit types through scouting. Counter their strengths with appropriate units. For example, if they field many Spearmen, train Archers.
    • Establish a Barracks, Archery Range, and Stable as needed.
    • Maintain a balanced army composition. Don't over-commit to a single unit type unless specifically required by the mission.
  • Fortification & Map Control:

    • Build Outposts at strategic choke points or near vulnerable resource nodes. Upgrade them with Embrasures for increased defensive capabilities.
    • Wall off exposed areas of your base, especially against aggressive AI opponents. Stone Walls are more durable than Palisade Walls but require more resources.
    • Capture and hold Sacred Sites for a steady trickle of Gold, or to fulfill mission objectives.

Late Game Siege & Victory Conditions

In the Imperial Age (Age IV), the game often revolves around powerful siege units and decisive engagements.

  • Siege Weaponry:

    • Construct a Siege Workshop and begin producing siege units like Mangonels, Springalds, and Trebuchets.
    • Mangonels: Excellent for area-of-effect damage against clustered enemy units and buildings.
    • Springalds: Crucial for countering enemy siege weapons and heavily armored units.
    • Trebuchets: Your primary tool for destroying enemy Town Centers, Keeps, and other heavily fortified structures from a distance.
  • Resource Management: By the late game, you should have multiple Town Centers and a robust economy. Ensure you have a healthy surplus of all resources, especially Gold and Food, to sustain your powerful Imperial Age army. Trade with allies if available via a Market.
  • Pushing for Victory:

    • Gather your forces and push towards the enemy's main base. Use your siege units to break through defenses while your military units protect them.
    • Focus fire on key enemy production buildings (Town Centers, Barracks, etc.) to cripple their ability to reinforce.
    • Be mindful of mission-specific victory conditions. Sometimes, eliminating all enemy units or capturing specific landmarks is enough.

Remember, adaptability is key. Observe the enemy's actions, adjust your strategy, and always keep your economy booming. Good luck, Commander!
