Late Game Economic Transitions

As your civilization matures into the Mythic Age, your economic focus must shift from rapid expansion and resource gathering to sustained production, technological superiority, and the strategic conversion of surplus resources. This phase is less about building new Villagers and more about optimizing existing infrastructure and preparing for decisive engagements.

Optimizing Resource Flow

By the late game, your primary resource income should be robust. However, inefficiencies can still cripple your war efforts. Focus on these key areas:

  • Farm Transition: If you haven't already, transition all food production to Farms. While Hunting and Foraging are efficient early on, Farms provide an inexhaustible supply. Ensure all available Villagers are assigned to Farms, and consider researching the Plow, Irrigation, and Hand Axe upgrades at the Granary for maximum yield.
  • Gold Sustainment: Gold is often the most contested resource in the late game. Secure multiple Gold Mines and protect them with towers, walls, and military units. Research Pickaxe, Shaft Mine, and Gold Mine upgrades at the Mining Camp. If Gold Mines are depleted or contested, establish Trade Routes.
  • Wood Management: Wood becomes less critical for unit production in the Mythic Age but remains vital for building fortifications, siege weapons, and some Myth Units. Ensure a steady supply, but avoid over-committing Villagers if other resources are scarce. Research Wood Axe and Bow Saw at the Lumber Camp.

Trade Routes and Market Manipulation

When natural resources dwindle, trade becomes your economic backbone. Establishing secure and efficient trade routes is paramount.

  • Caravan Network: Build multiple Caravans from your Town Centers to allied Town Centers or your own distant Town Centers. The longer the trade route, the more gold each Caravan generates. Protect these routes fiercely from enemy raids.
  • Market Upgrades: Invest in all Market upgrades: Coinage, Currency, and Usury. These significantly increase the gold generated by your Caravans and improve resource exchange rates.
  • Resource Exchange Strategy: Use the Market to convert surplus resources into needed ones. For example, if you have an abundance of Wood but are low on Gold, sell Wood at the Market. Be mindful of fluctuating prices; selling large quantities of a single resource can depress its value. Conversely, buying a scarce resource can inflate its price.

God Power and Myth Unit Integration

Certain God Powers and Myth Units can provide significant economic boosts or protection in the late game.

  • Egyptian Gods:
    • Isis: Her Monuments reduce the cost of technologies and increase the effectiveness of economic upgrades. The Prosperity God Power grants a burst of all resources, perfect for a late-game surge.
    • Set: The Vision God Power can reveal enemy resource locations, allowing you to target their economy. His Priests can convert enemy units, potentially adding to your workforce or army.
  • Greek Gods:
    • Zeus: While primarily military, the Bolt God Power can instantly remove a key economic threat or unit.
    • Hades: His unique ability to generate free Ancestor units from fallen soldiers can save valuable resources.
  • Norse Gods:
    • Odin: His Ravens provide excellent scouting for enemy resource operations. The Forest of Stone God Power can deny enemy access to wood or create defensive barriers.
    • Loki: His Myth Units, particularly the Jarls and Hersirs, are excellent for raiding enemy economies.
  • Atlantean Gods:
    • Kronos: The Deconstruct God Power can instantly destroy enemy economic buildings, crippling their production.
    • Gaia: Her Lush areas provide free food and wood for buildings, reducing the need for constant Villager allocation.

Economic Defense and Expansion

Protecting your late-game economy is as crucial as building it. Your opponent will likely target your resource lines.

  • Fortify Trade Routes: Place Watch Towers and Fortresses along your Caravan paths, especially in contested areas. Station a few military units to patrol these routes.
  • Secure New Territories: Even in the late game, new resource patches can be found. Use your scout units to locate untapped Gold Mines or fertile land for additional Farms. Rapidly secure these with a new Town Center or defensive structures.
  • Counter-Raiding: Don't just defend; retaliate. Send fast raiding units (e.g., Hippikons, Chariots, Ulfsarks) to disrupt your opponent's economy. Destroy their Farms, Lumber Camps, and Gold Mines to starve their war machine.
