Advanced Combat Mechanics
Welcome, aspiring mythic commanders, to the "Advanced Combat Mechanics" section of our guide for Age of Mythology: Retold! While the basics of unit counters and resource management are crucial, true mastery lies in understanding and exploiting the deeper layers of combat. This section will equip you with the knowledge to turn the tide of battle through precise unit control, strategic ability usage, and environmental awareness.
Micro-Management: The Art of Precision
Effective micro-management can often overcome numerical disadvantages or even counter-unit matchups. It's about getting the most out of every single unit in your army.
- Focus Firing: Always prioritize high-threat or low-health enemy units. For example, when facing a mixed army of Axemen and Slingers, instruct your Cavalry to focus down the Slingers first. Their ranged damage is often more impactful in the early stages of a fight, and eliminating them quickly reduces the overall damage output of the enemy. Use the 'Attack-Move' command (default 'A' + Left Click) and then manually right-click individual targets.
- Stutter Stepping with Ranged Units: This technique allows your ranged units (Archers, Slingers, Gastraphetes) to move between attacks, maximizing their damage output while repositioning. After a unit fires, immediately issue a short move command, then another attack command. This is particularly effective against slower melee units, allowing your ranged forces to kite them indefinitely. Practice this with your Chariot Archers in the early game to harass enemy Villagers or slow-moving Infantry.
- Retreat and Re-engage: Don't be afraid to pull damaged units out of combat. A unit at 10% health still costs resources to replace. Send critically wounded units to the backline or to a nearby Town Center for healing (if playing as Norse with a Hersir or Egyptian with a Priest). Once healed, they can rejoin the fray.
God Power Synergy and Timing
God Powers are not just flashy abilities; they are game-changing tools that, when used correctly, can swing entire battles. Understanding their nuances and optimal timing is key.
- Zeus's Bolt: This isn't just for taking out a single pesky Hero. Consider using it on an enemy Mythic Unit that is heavily damaging your core army, such as an early Minotaur or a powerful Colossus. Alternatively, use it to instantly destroy a critical enemy building like a Barracks or a Siege Workshop to halt their production during a push.
- Poseidon's Lure: While excellent for resource gathering, Lure can also be a powerful combat tool. Place it strategically to draw enemy units into a choke point where your ranged units can decimate them, or to pull them away from a critical objective like your Town Center. Experiment with placing it just outside an enemy's line of sight to surprise them.
- Isis's Prosperity: Beyond its economic benefits, Prosperity can be a defensive powerhouse. Cast it over your Town Center or a critical defensive structure like a Fortress under siege. The increased resource generation can allow you to quickly train more defensive units or research vital upgrades to repel the attack.
- Odin's Great Hunt: While primarily economic, the immediate food boost can be used to rapidly train a large contingent of powerful units like Ulfsarks or even an early handful of Raiding Cavalry to surprise an unsuspecting opponent.
- Set's Vision: This God Power provides invaluable scouting. Use it before a major engagement to ascertain enemy army composition and positioning. Knowing if they're heavy on Archers or Cavalry allows you to adjust your unit production and strategy accordingly, giving you a significant tactical advantage.
Terrain and Positional Play
The battlefield itself offers numerous strategic opportunities. Ignoring terrain is a common mistake that advanced players exploit.
- Choke Points: Narrow passages, bridges, or gaps between forests are ideal for funneling enemy units. Place your strongest melee units (e.g., Hoplites, Axemen, Spearmen) at the front, supported by ranged units behind them. This minimizes the number of enemy units that can engage your frontline simultaneously, allowing your ranged units to deal damage safely.
- High Ground Advantage: Units on higher ground gain a damage bonus against units on lower ground. Conversely, units on lower ground suffer a damage penalty. Always try to engage from elevated positions, especially with ranged units. Look for hills and plateaus around key objectives or your base.
- Forest Ambush: Forests provide line-of-sight blocking. Use them to hide units for surprise attacks. For example, position a group of raiding Cavalry or Mythic Units (e.g., Cyclops, Minotaurs) just inside a forest near an enemy resource gathering point. When their Villagers approach, spring the ambush for maximum disruption.
- Water Crossings: Units often move slower through water. If you can force an enemy army to cross a body of water, it creates a vulnerable window for your ranged units to inflict heavy damage before they can engage your melee forces.
Unit Ability Utilization
Many units possess unique abilities that can turn the tide of a skirmish. Don't just rely on auto-attack; actively use these skills.
- Minotaur's Gore: This ability knocks back enemy units, creating space for your other units or disrupting enemy formations. Use it to push dangerous melee units away from your ranged units, or to clear a path for your own melee units to engage a specific target.
- Cyclops's Throw: The Cyclops can pick up and throw enemy units, dealing damage and stunning them. Target high-value units like enemy Heroes, Mythic Units, or even siege weapons to temporarily neutralize their threat.
- Priest's Conversion (Egyptian): While risky, a well-timed Conversion can steal a powerful enemy unit, turning their strength against them. Prioritize converting expensive Mythic Units or Heroes that pose a significant threat. Ensure your Priest is protected during the channel time.
- Hersir's Inspire (Norse): The Hersir's ability to boost the attack of nearby friendly units is invaluable. Keep your Hersir positioned strategically within your main army to maximize its impact during engagements.
- Chiron's Pierce (Atlantean): Chiron's ranged attack pierces through multiple enemies. Position him to hit as many units as possible, especially against tightly packed formations of Infantry or Archers.
By integrating these advanced combat mechanics into your gameplay, you'll move beyond simply building units and clashing armies. You'll begin to orchestrate battles, exploiting every advantage and turning the tide in your favor, even against the most formidable opponents in Age of Mythology: Retold.
