Key Greek Units
The Greek civilization in Age of Mythology: Retold boasts a versatile and powerful roster of units, blending disciplined human soldiers with awe-inspiring mythological creatures. Understanding their strengths and roles is crucial for mastering Greek strategy.
Greek Human Units
The backbone of any Greek army relies on its well-trained human units, each fulfilling a specific tactical role:
- Hoplite: These heavy infantry units are the quintessential Greek soldier. Equipped with spear and shield, they are exceptionally strong against cavalry and other infantry, forming the core of your front line. Upgrade them to maximize their defensive and offensive capabilities.
- Peltast: Light and agile ranged units, Peltasts excel at countering enemy archers and other light infantry. Their javelins can quickly decimate opposing ranged forces, making them vital for protecting your own Toxotes or Gastraphetes.
- Toxotes: Standard archers, Toxotes provide consistent ranged damage against most unit types, particularly effective against unarmored targets. They are a staple for softening up enemy lines before your melee units engage.
- Hippikon: Swift and powerful cavalry, Hippikons are excellent for raiding enemy economies, flanking engagements, and quickly dispatching ranged units. Their speed allows for rapid map control and harassment.
- Prodromos: Specialized anti-cavalry scouts, Prodromos are light cavalry units designed to counter enemy mounted forces. Their bonus damage against cavalry makes them an essential early-game unit for fending off aggressive raids.
- Gastraphetes: Elite, long-range crossbowmen available in later ages, Gastraphetes are siege units in all but name. They deal immense damage to buildings and heavily armored units, making them crucial for pushing through fortified positions.
Greek Heroes: Slayers of Myth
Unlike other civilizations, Greek heroes are unique in their ability to specifically target and deal bonus damage to Myth Units. This makes them indispensable for countering your opponent's divine forces.
- Hero Mechanic: Each Greek god you choose to worship grants access to a specific hero unit. For example, Zeus provides access to powerful heroes like Jason and Hercules. These heroes are not only strong combatants but also possess a significant damage bonus against Myth Units, making them the primary counter to creatures like Minotaurs, Cyclopes, or Hydras. Always ensure you have heroes on the field when facing a Myth Unit-heavy army.
- Recruitment: Heroes are typically trained from the Town Center or Temple, and their availability and specific abilities depend on your chosen Major God and minor god advancements.
Key Greek Myth Units
Greek myth units are a diverse and formidable force, offering unique abilities to turn the tide of battle:
- Minotaur: A powerful and durable myth unit, the Minotaur possesses a devastating area-of-effect knockback attack. This ability can disrupt enemy formations, send units flying, and create openings for your other forces. Excellent for breaking up tightly packed groups of infantry.
- Colossus: A massive, iron-clad construct, the Colossus is a siege unit and tank rolled into one. It excels at destroying buildings and absorbing immense amounts of damage, making it ideal for leading an assault on an enemy base. Its high HP and armor make it incredibly resilient.
- Cyclops: These one-eyed giants are powerful melee myth units capable of picking up and throwing enemy units, dealing damage and disrupting their positions. They are particularly effective against groups of human units.
- Medusa: A ranged myth unit with a unique petrifying gaze. Medusa can turn enemy units to stone, effectively removing them from combat for a short duration. This crowd-control ability is invaluable for neutralizing dangerous threats or creating tactical advantages.
- Manticore: A flying myth unit that fires volleys of spikes, the Manticore is effective against groups of infantry and archers. Its aerial nature allows it to bypass terrain and attack from unexpected angles, making it a potent harassing unit.
- Centaur: Fast and agile ranged cavalry, Centaurs are excellent for hit-and-run tactics and harassing enemy villagers or vulnerable units. Their speed and ranged attack make them difficult to pin down.
