Defensive Tactics & Fortification
In Age of Mythology: Retold, a well-executed defense is often the cornerstone of victory, allowing you to weather early aggression, secure your economy, and prepare for a decisive counter-attack. Neglecting your defenses can lead to swift defeat, while over-investing can stifle your offensive capabilities. The key lies in strategic fortification and leveraging your chosen civilization's unique strengths.
Foundational Defensive Principles
- Strategic Walling: Identify vulnerable approaches to your base and wall them off. Walls are excellent for delaying enemy advances, forcing them to commit siege units, and funneling them into kill zones. Remember that walls are most effective when supported by other defensive structures or units.
- Choke Point Fortification: Utilize natural choke points on the map, such as narrow passages between forests or hills, to your advantage. Placing defensive structures like Towers or Fortresses at these locations can create formidable bottlenecks that severely impede enemy movement.
- Garrisoning Units: Always garrison military units in your Town Centers, Fortresses, and Towers when under attack. Garrisoned units provide additional firepower and gain protection, significantly increasing the structure's defensive capabilities. This is particularly effective for ranged units.
- Terrain Advantage: High ground provides a combat bonus for ranged units and structures, increasing their line of sight and damage output. Always prioritize placing key defensive buildings on elevated terrain whenever possible. Natural barriers like cliffs, forests, and rivers can also be integrated into your defensive perimeter, reducing the number of avenues an attacker can take.
- Economic Protection: Ensure your resource gatherers are well-protected. Placing economic buildings like Lumber Camps and Mining Camps within the safety of your walls or near defensive structures minimizes their vulnerability to raids.
Civilization-Specific Defensive Strengths
Egyptians
The Egyptians excel at static defense, boasting resilient structures and unique upgrades that make their fortifications particularly difficult to breach.
- Watch Towers: Egyptian Watch Towers are robust and can be upgraded with technologies like Masonry and Architecture for increased health and armor.
- Migdol Strongholds: These powerful defensive structures are unique to the Egyptians and act as both a unit production building and a formidable defensive tower, capable of garrisoning units and firing projectiles.
- Monuments: While primarily used for Favor generation, Monuments also provide a small defensive presence and can be strategically placed to extend your line of sight or block narrow paths.
- Priests: Egyptian Priests can heal structures, significantly extending the lifespan of your fortifications under sustained assault.
Gaia Atlanteans
Gaia Atlanteans offer a unique blend of mobile and static defense, with their settlements acting as both economic hubs and defensive strongholds.
- Lure: Gaia's unique God Power, Lure, can be used defensively to draw enemy units away from critical areas or into ambushes, buying precious time for your defenses to react.
- Gaia's Forest: This God Power creates a dense forest, which can be used to block enemy paths, create new choke points, or hide your economic operations from enemy scouts.
- Automatons: While not strictly defensive structures, Automatons can be used as mobile defensive units, particularly effective at guarding resource nodes or reinforcing threatened areas.
- Obelisks: These structures provide vision and can be upgraded to fire projectiles, making them excellent early-game defensive outposts.
Defensive God Powers
God Powers can turn the tide of a defensive engagement, offering powerful tools to repel invaders or protect your assets.
- Restoration (Greek - Zeus/Hera): Instantly heals a large group of your units and structures, invaluable for recovering from a heavy assault.
- Ceasefire (Norse - Odin/Thor): Temporarily stops all combat, giving you time to repair structures, reinforce positions, or reposition units.
- Sentinel (Greek - Poseidon): Summons four Sentinels that act as powerful, immobile defensive towers, perfect for reinforcing a threatened area or creating a new defensive line.
- Frost (Norse - Loki/Baldr): Freezes enemy units in place, making them vulnerable to attack and preventing them from damaging your structures or units.
- Tornado (Egyptian - Set/Isis): While often used offensively, a well-placed Tornado can devastate an attacking army and clear siege weapons from your walls.
- Plague of Serpents (Egyptian - Ra/Isis): Summons a swarm of Serpents that can distract and damage enemy units, buying time for your defenses.
- Shockwave (Atlantean - Oranos/Gaia): Knocks back and damages enemy units, creating space and disrupting their formations.
Defensive Upgrades and Technologies
Always prioritize researching defensive technologies at your Town Centers, Armories, and Temples. Key upgrades include:
- Masonry & Architecture: Increase the health and armor of all your buildings.
- Ballistics: Improves the accuracy of your ranged units and defensive structures.
- Fortify: Increases the health of your walls.
- Watch Tower/Guard Tower/Sentry Tower: Upgrades that enhance the attack and health of your towers.
- Siegecraft (Armory): Reduces the damage your buildings take from siege weapons.
Balancing Defense and Offense
While a strong defense is crucial, avoid becoming too passive. Your fortifications should serve to protect your economy and allow you to build up an army for a counter-attack. Continuously scouting enemy movements and anticipating their attacks will enable you to allocate defensive resources efficiently without over-committing.
