Victory Conditions
Understanding the various victory conditions in Age of Mythology is paramount to developing a winning strategy. Each condition requires a distinct approach, influencing your early game build order, resource management, and military composition. Don't get caught off guard – always be aware of how you and your opponents can achieve victory!
Standard Victory Conditions
Most skirmish and multiplayer matches will feature these core victory types. Adapt your strategy based on the map, your chosen civilization, and your opponent's playstyle.
- Conquest (Military Victory): This is the most straightforward and often the most satisfying victory. To achieve Conquest, you must completely eliminate all enemy players from the map. This means destroying all their buildings, including Town Centers, Temples, and military production facilities, and defeating all their units.
- Strategy:
- Focus on building a strong, balanced army. Research military upgrades at your Armory and Academy.
- Scout aggressively to locate enemy bases and identify weaknesses.
- use siege units (e.g., Catapults, Siege Towers) to quickly dismantle fortified positions.
- Consider using God Powers like Meteor or Tornado to cripple enemy defenses or armies.
- Maintain constant pressure. A sustained assault is often more effective than a single, massive attack.
- Wonder Victory: A more defensive and resource-intensive path to victory. To win via a Wonder, you must construct a Wonder and successfully defend it for a set period (typically 10 minutes).
- Strategy:
- Resource Management: Wonders are incredibly expensive, requiring 1000 Food, 1000 Wood, 1000 Gold, and 100 Favor. Start stockpiling these resources in the Mythic Age.
- Location: Build your Wonder in a well-defended, central location within your territory, ideally near your Town Centers for quick unit deployment.
- Defense: Fortify the area around your Wonder with walls, towers, and Castles (if playing as Greeks/Egyptians) or Hill Forts (Norse).
- Army Composition: Prepare a strong defensive army, including anti-myth units and siege units to counter enemy siege.
- God Powers: Save defensive God Powers like Restoration or Frost for critical moments during the countdown.
- Relic Victory (Specific Maps): Some maps feature special Relics that, when captured and held, can lead to victory. The number of Relics and the holding time vary by map.
- Strategy:
- Early Scouting: Prioritize scouting to locate all Relics as early as possible.
- Secure and Defend: Send a hero unit or a small group of units to capture a Relic. Once captured, build a strong defensive perimeter around it, including walls and watchtowers.
- Control the Map: Relic victories often require significant map control, as Relics are usually scattered.
- Harass Opponents: While defending your Relics, send raiding parties to disrupt enemy attempts to capture their own or yours.
Specialized Victory Conditions (Campaign & Custom Scenarios)
Beyond the standard conditions, the single-player campaign and many custom scenarios introduce unique objectives. Always read the mission briefing carefully!
- Objective Completion: Many campaign missions require you to complete specific tasks, such as destroying a particular enemy building, rescuing a hero, or escorting units to a designated location.
- Example: In "The Serpent's Pass," you might need to destroy the enemy's Stronghold.
- Strategy: Focus your efforts on the primary objective. Don't get sidetracked by unnecessary engagements unless they directly contribute to your goal.
- Time Limit: Some missions impose a time limit, requiring you to complete objectives before the clock runs out.
- Strategy: Efficiency is key. Optimize your build orders, minimize idle villagers, and make every military movement count.
- Survival: Certain scenarios demand that you survive for a set duration against overwhelming odds.
- Strategy: Prioritize defense, resource gathering, and unit production. use choke points, build strong walls, and research defensive upgrades.
Preventing Enemy Victory
Just as important as achieving your own victory is preventing your opponents from achieving theirs. Always be vigilant for signs of an enemy pushing for a specific win condition.
- Countering Conquest: Maintain a strong military presence and scout regularly to detect incoming attacks. Build defensive structures and keep your economy robust to replace lost units.
- Countering Wonder Victory: As soon as you see an enemy Wonder under construction (often indicated by a large, glowing foundation), immediately divert resources to building an army capable of destroying it. Siege units are crucial here.
- Countering Relic Victory: If an enemy is accumulating Relics, launch targeted attacks to reclaim them or destroy the defensive structures protecting them.
By mastering these victory conditions and understanding how to both achieve and counter them, you'll significantly improve your strategic depth and overall performance in Age of Mythology.
