Campaign Walkthrough (General)
Welcome, aspiring mythologist, to the comprehensive campaign walkthrough for Age of Mythology! This section provides a general strategic overview and actionable advice to conquer the "Fall of the Trident" campaign. While specific mission guides will delve into minute details, this general guide equips you with the foundational knowledge and tactical approaches necessary to succeed across all 32 scenarios.
Core Campaign Principles
Before diving into specific missions, internalize these overarching strategies that will serve you well throughout the campaign:
- Resource Management is Key: Always prioritize a balanced economy. Wood, Food, Gold, and Favor are all crucial. Don't over-invest in one resource at the expense of others. Villagers are your lifeblood; keep them producing and gathering.
- Scouting is Essential: Never operate blindly. Use your starting scout unit (e.g., the Pegasus for Greeks, Raven for Norse, Scarab for Egyptians) to uncover the map, locate enemy positions, resource nodes, and potential choke points. Early scouting can reveal crucial objectives or hidden threats.
- God Power Utilization: God Powers are powerful, one-time abilities that can turn the tide of battle or provide significant economic boosts. Understand each God Power's effect and save them for opportune moments. For instance, a well-placed Lightning Storm can decimate an enemy army, while Prosperity can jumpstart your economy.
- Myth Unit Synergy: Myth Units are powerful but expensive. Understand their strengths and weaknesses. Some, like the Greek Minotaur, excel at taking down buildings, while others, like the Egyptian Sphinx, are excellent against infantry. Combine them effectively with human units for maximum impact.
- Hero Units: Your hero units (e.g., Arkantos, Ajax, Chiron) are invaluable. They gain experience, grow stronger, and are particularly effective against Myth Units. Keep them alive and use their special abilities wisely.
Early Game Strategy (Archaic Age)
The initial stages of any mission are critical for setting up a strong foundation:
- Immediate Villager Production: As soon as the mission begins, queue up Villagers at your Town Center. Aim for a continuous stream of production.
- Resource Allocation:
- Food: Send your first few Villagers to hunt animals (e.g., Deer, Boar) or gather from berry bushes. Build a Granary nearby.
- Wood: Assign Villagers to chop wood from nearby forests. Construct a Lumber Camp to maximize efficiency.
- Gold: Once you have a steady food and wood income, send Villagers to mine gold. Build a Mining Camp.
- Scouting: Immediately send your starting scout unit to explore the immediate vicinity of your base. Look for additional resources, relics, and enemy presence.
- Temple Construction: Build a Temple early to begin generating Favor and to prepare for advancing to the Classical Age.
- Advance to Classical Age: Once you have sufficient resources and a Temple, research the Classical Age advancement. Choose your minor god carefully, as their God Powers and Myth Units will significantly impact your strategy.
Mid Game Strategy (Classical & Heroic Ages)
This phase is where you'll expand your economy, build your army, and engage the enemy:
- Economic Expansion:
- Additional Town Centers: Secure and build additional Town Centers on settlements whenever possible. This dramatically increases your Villager production capacity and resource gathering rates.
- Farms: As hunting resources deplete, transition your food gatherers to building and working Farms.
- Market: Construct a Market to trade surplus resources for needed ones, or to research economic upgrades.
- Military Production:
- Barracks/Archery Ranges/Stables: Build appropriate military buildings based on your chosen civilization and the enemy's unit composition.
- Unit Composition: Aim for a balanced army. For example, Greek players might combine Hoplites (infantry), Toxotes (archers), and Hippikons (cavalry).
- Myth Units: Integrate Myth Units into your army. Remember their counter-units (e.g., Heroes counter Myth Units, cavalry counters archers).
- Defensive Structures: Build Walls and Towers around your base, especially if you anticipate early enemy attacks. Garrison archers in Towers for added defense.
- Advance to Heroic Age: Once your economy is stable and you have a decent army, advance to the Heroic Age. This unlocks more powerful units, technologies, and God Powers.
Late Game Strategy (Mythic Age)
The Mythic Age often brings decisive battles and powerful ultimate God Powers:
- Titan Gate/Wonder: If the mission objective involves building a Wonder or a Titan Gate, ensure you have a massive resource income and a strong defensive perimeter. Wonders are extremely expensive and take a long time to build.
- Ultimate God Powers: The Mythic Age grants access to your chosen major god's ultimate God Power (e.g., Earthquake for Zeus, Meteor for Ra). Use these strategically to destroy key enemy structures or armies.
- Siege Warfare: use powerful siege units like Catapults or Siege Towers to break through heavily fortified enemy positions.
- Constant Pressure: Maintain constant pressure on the enemy. Destroy their economic buildings, military production structures, and Town Centers to cripple their ability to retaliate.
By adhering to these general principles and adapting them to the specific challenges of each mission, you will be well on your way to guiding Arkantos and his allies to victory and preventing the "Fall of the Trident." Good luck, commander!
