Objective 1: Fortify Your Position
Upon commencing this mission, you will typically find yourself with either a pre-established base or a small initial force strategically located near a critical defensive objective, such as a Titan Gate or a similar vital structure. Your paramount and immediate priority is to meticulously fortify this position against impending enemy assaults. This involves a multi-faceted approach to defense and resource management.
Scouting for Anticipation
Before committing heavily to defensive structures, dispatch a scout unit (e.g., a starting scout, a cavalry unit, or even a lone villager in a pinch) to quickly survey the immediate surroundings. Identifying enemy attack directions, resource locations, and potential choke points will allow you to optimize your defensive placements and anticipate the most vulnerable areas of your base. Early scouting can reveal an enemy's preferred attack path, allowing you to concentrate defenses where they are most needed.
Defensive Structure Placement and Prioritization
Direct your Villagers to construct a robust network of defensive structures. Focus on:
- Walls: Begin by walling off vulnerable approaches and creating choke points. Prioritize stone walls over palisades for their superior durability once you advance to the Classical Age. Aim for at least two layers of walls in critical areas if resources permit.
- Defensive Towers: Erect Watch Towers or Sentry Towers at strategic locations along your walls and around key resource gathering points. These provide early warning and ranged damage against approaching enemies. For more advanced defense, especially in later ages, Fortresses offer significant firepower and can garrison units. Consider placing 3-4 towers at each primary entry point.
- Fortified Town Center: Research the 'Fortified Town Center' upgrade at your Town Center as soon as possible. This significantly increases its attack, hit points, and line of sight, making it a formidable defensive structure in its own right.
- God Powers for Defense: Depending on your chosen deity, certain God Powers can be invaluable for early defense. For instance, a well-placed Bolt (Zeus) can instantly eliminate a threatening early Myth Unit, while Forest Fire (Hades) can create a temporary barrier or damage clustered enemy units. Restoration (Isis) can heal damaged buildings and units during a siege. Remember that while immediate defense is crucial, some God Powers (like Ceasefire or Lightning Storm) are best saved for critical offensive pushes later in the game or to turn the tide during a major emergency. Use them judiciously.
Always prioritize choke points and naturally vulnerable areas of your base. If the mission objective includes defending a Wonder, ensure it is heavily protected with multiple layers of walls and towers.
Establishing a Robust Economy
A strong defense is unsustainable without a thriving economy. Simultaneously with your defensive construction, focus on:
- Villager Production: Continuously train Villagers from your Town Center until you have a healthy and balanced income stream across all resources (Food, Wood, Gold, Favor). A good early-game target is 15-20 Villagers on food, 10-15 on wood, and 8-12 on gold. Adjust these numbers based on your immediate needs:
- If you are rushing to build many defensive structures (walls, towers), prioritize wood and stone (if available).
- If you need to quickly advance to the next age or train expensive Myth Units, allocate more villagers to gold.
- If food resources are scarce or under attack, shift villagers from wood to food, or research farming upgrades.
- Resource Gathering Buildings: Build multiple Lumber Camps, Mining Camps, and Farms to efficiently gather resources. Ensure these are protected by your defensive perimeter.
- Economic Upgrades: Research economic upgrades at your Town Center and Storehouse (e.g., 'Hand Axe', 'Pickaxe', 'Hunting Dogs') to boost gathering rates.
Continuous Unit Production and Diverse Army Composition
While fortifications are crucial, they are only as strong as the units defending them. Establish a steady stream of military units:
- Military Production Buildings: Construct multiple Barracks, Archery Ranges, Stables, and Temples. Having 2-3 of each allows for faster unit training and replacement during engagements.
- Early Defensive Unit Composition: Even before establishing a full army, basic units can significantly bolster your defenses, especially when garrisoned in towers or positioned behind walls.
- Infantry: Spearmen (Greek Hoplites, Egyptian Spearmen, Norse Ulfsarks, Atlantean Murmillos) are excellent for holding choke points and countering early cavalry rushes.
- Archers: Toxotes (Greek), Slingers (Egyptian), Throwing Axemen (Norse), and Arcus (Atlantean) provide crucial ranged support from behind walls or towers, picking off approaching enemies.
- Myth Units: If you have access to early Myth Units through your chosen deity (e.g., Minotaur, Scarab), deploy them strategically against enemy heroes or other Myth Units.
- Diverse Army Composition: Your army must be capable of countering both human and Myth Units. A balanced force is key.
- Greek: Early defense often benefits from a core of Hoplites (good against cavalry) and Toxotes (ranged damage, good against flying units and other archers). Hippikons can be used for flanking or raiding.
- Egyptian: Spearmen (anti-cavalry) and Slingers (anti-archer) form a solid early defensive line. Chariot Archers offer mobility and ranged damage.
- Norse: Ulfsarks (versatile infantry) and Throwing Axemen (ranged, good against other infantry) are excellent early choices. Raiding Cavalry can harass enemy gatherers.
- Atlantean: Murmillos (strong infantry) and Turmas (fast cavalry, good against archers) are foundational. Arcus (ranged) provide necessary ranged support.
- Hero Units: Arkantos, or any other hero units provided, are invaluable for countering powerful enemy Myth Units due to their bonus damage against them. Position them strategically to intercept these threats.
- Military Upgrades: Research military upgrades at your Armory (e.g., 'Copper Weapons', 'Copper Shields', 'Medium Infantry') to enhance your units' combat effectiveness.
A well-fortified base, supported by a robust economy and a continuously produced, diverse army, is absolutely essential for surviving the initial onslaughts and setting the stage for your eventual victory.
