Conquering Story Realm Bosses
Age of Wonders 4 features climactic encounters against powerful Godir. Success requires tailored counters to their specific magical affinities and tactical behaviors.
Turiel the Ascended (The Eternal Throne)
Turiel leans heavily into Order Affinity, utilizing high Spirit resistance and devastating area-of-effect Faithful buffs. To defeat him:
- Focus Fire: Turiel often stays in the backline. Use flying units or Phase abilities to bypass his Shield units.
- Resistance Choice: Stack Spirit Resistance and use "Cleansing Ritual" to remove Condemned stacks.
- Counter-Magic: Avoid purely Holy damage; use Frost or Blight to exploit his lack of elemental resistances.
Karissa the Red (The Ashlands)
A master of Chaos Affinity, Karissa specializes in Fire damage and morale manipulation. She aims to break your units before they reach her.
- Fire Immunity: Prioritize the "Fire Resistance" minor transformation or "Elemental Ward" spells.
- Siege Strategy: Karissa's capital usually has many turrets. Use multi-stack sieges to deplete her mana reserves before the manual battle begins.
- Unit Composition: Avoid Tier 1 "chaff" units; her fire bursts will cause a morale chain-reaction. Use high-tier, Fearless units.
Gold Tier Ancient Wonder Guardians
Gold Wonders represent the pinnacle of tactical combat outside of the main campaign. These guardians function as high-HP mini-bosses with specialized mechanics.
The Lost Wizard (Wizard Tower Ruins)
This encounter is a race against time. The Wizard will cast powerful tactical spells every turn they remain alive.
- Tactical Strategy: Use units with "Spell Lock" or "Silence" to prevent the Wizard from using world-shaking abilities.
- Priority: Ignore the summoned elementals and focus all damage on the Wizard; their summons vanish upon the leader's death.
The Reaper (Lich’s Palace)
The Reaper utilizes Shadow Affinity and the "Instant Death" mechanic on units with low health.
- Strategy: Keep unit health above 50% at all times. Use "Ward" buffs to prevent the "Marked for Death" status.
- Damage Type: Use Spirit or Fire damage. Avoid Frost and Poison, as the undead guardians are immune.
The Phoenix (Phoenix Nest)
The ultimate test of endurance, the Phoenix will resurrect once upon death unless specific conditions are met.
- Strategy: Ensure you have a unit standing on the "Phoenix Ember" hex immediately after the first kill to prevent the Rebirth mechanic.
- Positioning: Space units two hexes apart to mitigate the massive "Explosive Death" damage-on-contact.
