Alignment & Morality
In Age of Wonders 4, your ruler's alignment and the morality of your empire are dynamic systems that profoundly impact gameplay, from diplomatic relations and unit morale to available Tomes and even the physical appearance of your Throne City. Unlike a static choice at character creation, your alignment shifts based on your actions throughout a campaign or custom game. Understanding and manipulating this system is crucial for optimizing your strategy.
Tracking Your Alignment
Your current alignment is displayed on the top-right of your screen, next to your ruler's portrait. It ranges from Pure Good to Pure Evil, with Neutrality in the middle. Hovering over the alignment icon will show a tooltip detailing recent actions that have influenced your standing and your current "Morality Score." This score is a hidden numerical value that dictates your alignment tier.
- Pure Good: Represents the highest moral standing.
- Good: Generally benevolent actions.
- Neutral: Balanced or indifferent actions.
- Evil: Generally malevolent actions.
- Pure Evil: Represents the lowest moral standing.
Influencing Your Alignment
Almost every significant decision you make, from global spells to city management, will have an alignment impact. Here's a breakdown of common actions and their effects:
Good-Aligned Actions
These actions will push your alignment towards Good and Pure Good. They often involve protecting the weak, upholding justice, or fostering peace.
- Liberating Free Cities: When you conquer a Free City that was previously under another ruler's control, choosing to "Liberate" it (rather than annexing or razing) grants a significant boost to Good alignment. This also improves relations with other Good-aligned rulers.
- Accepting Surrender: If an enemy ruler offers to surrender, accepting their terms (especially if they are weak) is a Good-aligned choice.
- Diplomatic Pacts: Forming Defensive Pacts, Alliances, and especially Vassalage agreements with Free Cities often provides minor Good alignment gains over time, reflecting your benevolent influence.
- Certain Event Choices: Many random events that pop up will present choices. Opting for solutions that aid distressed populations, protect ancient sites, or resolve conflicts peacefully will typically grant Good alignment. For example, an event asking you to "Aid the Starving Villagers" by spending some Food will grant Good alignment.
- Specific Tome Spells: Tomes like the Tome of Faith or Tome of the Beacon contain spells that can provide minor Good alignment boosts, such as the "Hallowed Ground" city spell.
Evil-Aligned Actions
These actions will push your alignment towards Evil and Pure Evil. They typically involve conquest, cruelty, or exploitation.
- Razing Cities: Completely destroying a conquered city is a strong Evil alignment action. This will significantly damage your relations with Good-aligned rulers.
- Enslaving Population: When conquering a city, choosing to "Enslave" its population for immediate resource gains is a major Evil alignment choice. This also provides a temporary production bonus to your empire.
- Executing Captured Heroes/Rulers: After defeating an enemy hero or ruler in battle, you'll have the option to execute them. This is a very strong Evil alignment action and will be noticed by all other rulers.
- Demanding Tribute: Using diplomatic options to demand tribute from weaker rulers or Free Cities without offering anything in return can provide minor Evil alignment.
- Certain Event Choices: Choosing options in random events that involve exploiting resources, sacrificing innocents, or instigating conflict will grant Evil alignment. For instance, an event offering to "Sacrifice a captured unit for research" will be an Evil choice.
- Specific Tome Spells: Tomes like the Tome of the Horde or Tome of the Great Destroyer feature spells and abilities that often have an Evil alignment cost or provide Evil alignment gains, such as the "Dark Rituals" city spell.
Neutral Actions
Many actions have no direct alignment impact, or their impact is negligible. These include most combat victories, exploring the world map, and basic city building. Focusing on these can help maintain a Neutral alignment if that is your goal.
Consequences of Alignment
Your alignment isn't just a cosmetic badge; it has tangible effects on your gameplay:
Diplomacy
- Ruler Relations: Rulers with similar alignments will generally have better starting relations and be more amenable to diplomatic agreements. Conversely, opposing alignments (e.g., Pure Good vs. Pure Evil) will lead to significant diplomatic penalties and often outright hostility.
- Vassalage: Good-aligned rulers are more likely to accept Vassalage from other Good rulers, while Evil rulers might prefer to dominate or enslave.
- War Declarations: Good-aligned rulers might declare war on you if your Evil alignment becomes too pronounced, seeing you as a threat to the realm. The reverse is also true; Evil rulers might view Good empires as weak targets.
Unit Morale & Traits
- Morale Bonuses/Penalties: Units within your empire may gain morale bonuses or penalties based on your alignment, especially if their inherent racial traits or culture clash with your current moral standing. For example, a "Honorable" unit might suffer morale penalties under a Pure Evil ruler.
- Ruler Traits: Reaching Pure Good or Pure Evil alignment tiers can unlock unique ruler traits that provide powerful empire-wide bonuses. For Pure Good, you might gain "Divine Aura," granting increased Spirit damage to your units. For Pure Evil, "Tyrant's Grip" could provide bonus Production in conquered cities.
Throne City Appearance
Your Throne City will visually transform to reflect your alignment. A Pure Good city might feature glowing spires and lush greenery, while a Pure Evil city could become a dark, foreboding fortress with jagged architecture and ominous auras.
Tome Access & Affinity
While not a hard lock, certain Tomes have a thematic alignment. Leaning heavily into Good or Evil will naturally guide you towards Tomes that complement that playstyle. For instance, a Pure Good ruler will find the Tome of the Archon more appealing, while a Pure Evil ruler might gravitate towards the Tome of the Demon Gate.
Strategic Considerations
- Consistent Playstyle: For maximum benefit, try to maintain a consistent alignment. Flipping back and forth between Good and Evil will lead to diplomatic instability and prevent you from unlocking the powerful Pure alignment traits.
- Early Game Decisions: Your initial actions can set the tone. If you plan for a benevolent empire, prioritize liberating Free Cities and forming alliances. If you aim for a tyrannical conquest, don't hesitate to raze and enslave.
- Responding to Events: Always consider the alignment impact of your choices in random events. Sometimes, a seemingly minor decision can nudge you closer to your desired alignment.
- Ruler Personality: When creating your custom ruler, consider their inherent personality traits. A "Just" ruler will naturally gain Good alignment from certain actions, while a "Cruel" ruler will lean towards Evil. These traits can amplify or mitigate the alignment impact of your choices.
Mastering the Alignment & Morality system in Age of Wonders 4 adds a rich layer of role-playing and strategic depth. Whether you choose to be a benevolent protector or a ruthless conqueror, understanding how your actions shape your empire's moral compass is key to achieving victory.
