Unit Upgrades & Evolution
Mastering unit upgrades and evolution is paramount to dominating the battlefields of Age of Wonders 4. Unlike simple stat boosts, this system allows for deep customization and strategic adaptation, transforming your basic recruits into formidable forces tailored to your specific playstyle and current threats. Understanding the various paths and requirements for these advancements is key to building an unstoppable army.
Basic Unit Tier Upgrades
Every unit in Age of Wonders 4 starts at a base tier. Through various means, these units can be upgraded to higher tiers, gaining significant stat improvements, new abilities, and often a change in their visual appearance. This is distinct from unit evolution, which often involves a more radical transformation.
- Researching Military Tech: The primary method for unlocking higher-tier unit versions is through the Military Tech Tree in your Research Screen. For example, researching Advanced Melee Training might upgrade your basic Spearman to a Pikeman, granting increased damage and the First Strike ability. Similarly, Improved Archery Techniques could transform Archers into Longbowmen with extended range.
- City Structures: Certain city buildings are prerequisites for recruiting or upgrading specific unit types. For instance, constructing a Barracks is essential for basic melee units, but to access elite versions like Champions, you might need to build an Elite Training Grounds or a Grand Armory. These structures often provide passive bonuses to units trained within that city as well.
- Empire Skills: Some Empire Skills in the Empire Development Tree offer direct upgrades or unlock advanced unit types. Look for skills like Martial Prowess or Arcane Infusion which can enhance existing units or provide access to entirely new, powerful variants.
Unit Evolution: Beyond Simple Upgrades
Unit evolution is a more transformative process, often tied to specific Tomes of Magic, racial transformations, or unique events. These evolutions can fundamentally change a unit's role, damage type, and even their creature type.
- Tome of Magic Evolutions: Many Tomes of Magic offer powerful unit transformations. For example:
- Tome of the Beast: Researching Animal Kinship and casting the Awaken the Beast spell on your Animal Units can evolve them into more powerful Monstrous Beasts with increased HP and damage.
- Tome of the Necromancer: The Raise Undead spell, unlocked via this tome, allows you to transform fallen enemies or even your own living units into various Undead forms like Skeletons or Zombies, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses (e.g., Fear Aura).
- Tome of the Archmage: Spells like Elemental Infusion can transform regular units into Elemental-attuned variants, granting them elemental damage and resistances.
- Racial Transformations: Your chosen Racial Form and subsequent Racial Transformations (e.g., Demonic Transformation, Plantkin Transformation) can evolve all units of that race. For instance, adopting Plantkin will grant all your units the Photosynthesis ability and potentially change their visual appearance to reflect their new botanical nature. These are often empire-wide effects, impacting all units you recruit of that race.
- Hero Skills and Equipment: While not direct unit evolution, certain Hero Skills or powerful Artifacts can provide temporary or permanent buffs that mimic evolutionary changes. A hero with Inspiring Presence can temporarily elevate the combat prowess of nearby units, while an artifact like the Amulet of the Dragon's Breath might grant a unit a powerful fire attack.
- Strategic Resource Buildings: Constructing specific Strategic Resource buildings, such as a Mana Well or a Knowledge Node, can sometimes unlock unique unit variants or provide global bonuses that effectively "evolve" your army's capabilities. For example, controlling a Mythic Forge might allow you to recruit Golems or upgrade existing Constructs.
Optimizing Your Upgrade Path
To effectively utilize the upgrade and evolution system, consider the following:
- Early Game Focus: Prioritize basic military tech to get your core units to Tier II quickly. Pikemen and Longbowmen provide a solid foundation.
- Mid-Game Specialization: Once your economy is stable, start investing in Tomes of Magic that align with your desired army composition. If you want a horde of undead, rush Tome of the Necromancer. If you prefer powerful magical beasts, aim for Tome of the Beast.
- Late-Game Power Spikes: Combine racial transformations with advanced tome evolutions for truly devastating units. A Demonic Plantkin Blight-Born Abomination (a hypothetical example) would be a terrifying force on the battlefield.
- Adapt to Opponents: If facing an enemy with strong physical defenses, evolve some units to deal Magical or Elemental Damage. If they rely on ranged units, evolve for High Defense or Charge Abilities.
- City Specialization: Designate certain cities as "training hubs" for specific unit types. A city with an Elite Training Grounds and a Grand Armory will produce superior melee units, while another with Arcane Sanctums might focus on magical units.
