Hero Recruitment & Management
Heroes are the backbone of your empire in Age of Wonders 4, leading armies, governing cities, and undertaking crucial quests. Mastering their recruitment and ongoing management is paramount to victory. Unlike regular units, heroes have no upkeep cost, making them incredibly valuable assets.
Recruiting New Heroes
There are several avenues for acquiring new heroes to bolster your forces:
- Hero Recruitment Pool: Every few turns, new heroes will appear in your recruitment pool, accessible via the "Heroes" tab in your empire management screen. These heroes come with varying starting skills, equipment, and sometimes even unique traits. The cost to recruit them scales with your empire's size and the hero's starting level. Prioritize heroes with skills that complement your current strategy or fill a specific need, such as a strong melee combatant for your front lines or a powerful spellcaster for ranged support.
- Quest Rewards: Completing certain quests, particularly those offered by Free Cities or major factions, can sometimes reward you with a new hero. These heroes often have lore-specific backgrounds or unique starting gear, making them excellent additions. Always check quest rewards carefully before committing.
- Event Choices: Random events that pop up throughout your campaign can occasionally present an option to recruit a new hero. These choices often come with trade-offs, such as spending resources or accepting a temporary debuff, but the hero reward can be well worth it.
- Tome of the Horde (Tier 1 Tome of Chaos): Researching the Tome of the Horde grants access to the "Call of the Horde" spell, which allows you to summon a new hero directly to your capital. This is an excellent way to quickly acquire a hero if your recruitment pool is unappealing or if you need a hero urgently for a specific task.
Hero Roles and Specializations
Each hero can be assigned one of two primary roles, which significantly impacts their skill tree and overall utility:
- Army Leader: Heroes assigned as army leaders gain access to skills that boost their army's combat prowess, movement speed, and morale. They are essential for exploring the world map, clearing Ancient Wonders, and engaging enemy armies.
- Key Skills: Look for skills like "Battlefield Commander" for increased unit damage, "Marching Orders" for improved movement, or "Inspiring Leader" for morale buffs.
- Equipment Focus: Prioritize weapons and armor that enhance their combat stats (e.g., "Greatsword of Smiting," "Plate Armor of Resilience") and artifacts that provide tactical advantages (e.g., "Amulet of Swiftness" for initiative, "Ring of Protection" for defensive bonuses).
- City Governor: Heroes assigned as city governors unlock skills that enhance city production, stability, resource generation, and defense. A well-placed governor can significantly accelerate your empire's growth.
- Key Skills: Focus on skills such as "Master Builder" for faster construction, "Resourceful Steward" for increased income, or "City Defender" for improved city defenses.
- Equipment Focus: Equip governors with items that boost their governing stats, such as "Scepter of Prosperity" for gold income or "Tome of Knowledge" for research points. Combat gear is less critical here.
Managing Hero Skills and Equipment
As heroes gain experience from combat or governing, they level up and earn skill points. These points can be invested in their unique skill tree, which branches based on their chosen role and starting class. Carefully consider your hero's intended purpose when allocating skill points.
- Skill Tree Navigation: The skill tree is divided into several tiers. Unlocking higher-tier skills often requires investing a certain number of points in lower tiers. Plan your skill progression to maximize the hero's effectiveness in their chosen role.
- Equipment Slots: Heroes have multiple equipment slots: Main Hand, Off Hand, Head, Body, Accessory 1, and Accessory 2. Always strive to equip your heroes with the best available gear.
- Acquiring Gear: Equipment can be found as loot from defeated enemies, rewards from Ancient Wonders, purchased from the in-game market, or crafted through certain Tomes (e.g., "Artisan's Tools" from the Tome of the Artificer).
- Strategic Equipping: Don't just equip the highest rarity item. Consider the item's stats and abilities in relation to your hero's role. A "Staff of Blasting" is excellent for a spellcaster, while a "Shield of the Stalwart" is better for a tanky melee hero.
- Retraining Heroes: If you find a hero's skill allocation or role is no longer optimal, you can retrain them for a cost. This allows you to reallocate all their skill points and even change their role, offering flexibility as your empire's needs evolve. Access this option via the hero's character sheet.
Hero Death and Revival
Heroes are powerful but not invincible. If a hero falls in battle, they are not permanently lost. Instead, they enter a "wounded" state. You have two primary options for their return:
- Automatic Revival: After a set number of turns (typically 3-5), a wounded hero will automatically revive back in your capital, albeit with a temporary debuff to their stats. This is the default and free option.
- Instant Revival: For a cost in Gold and Mana, you can instantly revive a wounded hero at your capital. This is crucial if you need a hero back in action immediately for a critical battle or quest. Access this option through the "Heroes" tab.
Remember, a strong roster of well-managed heroes can turn the tide of any conflict and ensure the prosperity of your burgeoning empire.
