Research & Empire Development
Mastering the art of research and strategic empire development is paramount to achieving victory in Age of Wonders 4. This section will guide you through optimizing your technological and societal advancements, ensuring your empire thrives from the early game to the late stages.
Early Game Research Priorities (Turns 1-20)
Your initial research choices lay the foundation for your entire playthrough. Focus on immediate gains that bolster your economy, expand your territory, and provide early combat advantages.
- First Spell Tome: Always prioritize a Tome that complements your chosen Faction and Leader's starting traits.
- For a Militaristic start, consider the Tome of the Horde for cheap, numerous units like the Goblin Scavenger, or the Tome of the Zealot for early morale buffs and the Zealot unit.
- For a Builder/Expansionist start, the Tome of the Faith for the Outpost of Faith spell (reduces outpost cost) or the Tome of the Builder for faster city construction are excellent choices.
- Empire Skills: Navigate to the Empire Development screen (hotkey 'E'). Your first few skill points should go into these critical areas:
- Expansion: Unlock City Cap Increase I as soon as possible. This allows you to found or conquer more cities without incurring severe penalties.
- Economy: Invest in Gold Income I and Knowledge Income I. These provide a flat bonus to your primary resources, accelerating your growth.
- Military: Depending on your playstyle, consider Unit Upkeep Reduction I to maintain a larger army or Unit Production Speed I for faster recruitment.
- Scouting & Exploration: Research spells that aid in early map vision, such as Scrying (Tome of the Seeker) to reveal nearby provinces, or unit-summoning spells to create additional scouts.
Mid-Game Empire Expansion & Specialization (Turns 21-60)
As your empire grows, your research and development should shift towards solidifying your power base, specializing your cities, and preparing for more significant conflicts.
- City Specialization: Once you have 2-3 cities, begin to specialize them.
- Production Hub: Designate one city to focus on unit production. Research Advanced Forges (Tome of the Artificer) and build Blacksmiths and Foundries.
- Knowledge Hub: Another city should be dedicated to research. Prioritize Advanced Libraries (Tome of the Scholar) and construct Arcane Libraries and Observatories.
- Food/Growth Hub: A third city can focus on population growth. Research Fertile Lands (Tome of the Fertility) and build Farms and Granaries.
- Strategic Resource Acquisition: Research spells and empire skills that allow you to exploit strategic resources like Mana Nodes, Gold Veins, and Ancient Wonders.
- The Outpost of Mana (Tome of the Archmage) is crucial for securing Mana Nodes.
- The Prosperity empire skill line boosts resource income from provinces.
- Advanced Unit Tomes: Begin researching Tomes that unlock more powerful units and unit enchantments.
- For melee-focused armies, the Tome of the Champion offers powerful buffs and the Champion unit.
- For ranged superiority, the Tome of the Storm provides lightning-based attacks and the Stormbringer unit.
- Defensive Measures: Don't neglect your defenses. Research Fortification (Tome of the Bulwark) to enhance city defenses and build Watchtowers on key chokepoints.
Late Game Domination & Victory Conditions (Turns 61+)
In the late game, your research should focus on achieving your chosen victory condition, whether it's through military conquest, magical supremacy, or expansion.
- Victory Condition Tomes:
- Military Victory: Prioritize Tomes that unlock Tier 4 and Tier 5 units, powerful combat enchantments, and strategic spells like Armageddon (Tome of the Apocalypse).
- Magic Victory: Focus on Tomes that grant access to the Wizard's Tower structures and the powerful Age of ... spells, such as Age of Cleansing (Tome of the Archmage).
- Expansion Victory: Research Tomes that further boost city growth, resource production, and diplomatic influence, like the Tome of the Golden Realm.
- Advanced Empire Skills: Continue investing in the higher tiers of your chosen Empire Skill paths.
- City Cap Increase II & III are essential for managing a vast empire.
- Advanced Resource Exploitation skills significantly boost your late-game economy.
- Hero Cap Increase allows you to field more powerful leaders in your armies.
- Global Spells & Enchantments: Research and cast powerful global spells that affect the entire map or provide sustained benefits to your empire. Examples include World Tree (Tome of the Goddess) for massive growth or Great Restoration (Tome of the Creator) for healing and stability.
- Artifact Forging: If you have the Tome of the Artificer, research and forge powerful artifacts for your heroes. Look for materials like Adamantium or Mithril from contested provinces to craft legendary gear.
Key Strategies for Efficient Research & Development
- Balance Research & Production: Don't neglect one for the other. A strong economy fuels both rapid research and robust unit production.
- Adapt to Your Environment: If you find yourself surrounded by aggressive neighbors, prioritize military research. If you have a peaceful start, focus on economic and expansionist Tomes.
- use Heroes: Assign heroes with the Scholar trait to your cities to boost Knowledge production. Equip them with artifacts that increase research speed.
- Outpost Placement: Strategically place outposts near resource nodes and Ancient Wonders to quickly integrate them into your empire and gain their benefits.
- Diplomacy for Knowledge: Consider trading with friendly AI factions for Knowledge or specific Tomes you might be lacking.
- Raze or Annex? When conquering a city, decide whether to raze it for immediate resources or annex it to expand your empire. Annexing is generally better for long-term growth, especially if the city has good infrastructure or strategic location.
