Alan Wake: Writer & Reality Bender
Alan Wake's journey through the Dark Place is a nightmarish experience where his writing directly influences reality. As a successful author of the Alex Casey thriller series, Alan finds himself trapped in a loop where his manuscript pages predict and shape the events around him. His ability to rewrite reality is a fundamental mechanic for progressing through the game and solving its many mysteries.
Alan's story begins with him feeling burned out after writing six Alex Casey novels in seven years, leading him to kill off the detective in The Sudden Stop. Two years later, suffering from writer's block and marital strain, his wife Alice books a holiday to Bright Falls. Upon arrival, a mysterious old woman directs Alan to a cabin on an island in Cauldron Lake. There, Alice reveals a surprise: a typewriter and paper, intended to help him write. Alan storms out, only to wake up later, realizing the deadline for delivering a manuscript to a kidnapper is near. He attempts to deliver the pages but encounters FBI agent Robert Nightingale, who is hostile towards writers. Alan escapes the ensuing chaos, only to be caught by Nightingale again. Sheriff Breaker, however, no longer believes Nightingale is a real FBI agent, as Nightingale himself realizes he's read these events in Alan's confiscated pages. The Dark Presence then seizes Nightingale, and Alan sets out with Sheriff Breaker to find Cynthia at a decommissioned hydro-electric power station.
