Combat Resources & Consumables — Alan Wake 2 Guide

Survival in Alan Wake 2's combat hinges on understanding the light-and-shadow dance. First, burn away enemy darkness with your torch, then deal damage with conventional weapons. Positioning is vital during this vulnerable phase. This guide details essential combat strategies and consumable usage.

  • Combat Rhythm: Burn away enemy darkness with your torch, then attack with weapons.
  • Resource Management: Save resources for boss encounters.
  • Flares: Always carry at least one flare.
  • Healing: Keep healing items in your quick-access menu.
  • Environment: Look for environmental shortcuts and safe rooms.

Combat in Alan Wake II is challenging. Saga's default pistol is not very effective, requiring most of an ammo clip for even weak enemies. Alan's default .357 magnum is more potent, often taking down enemies with three shots to the face. Saga unlocks more effective weapons quickly, while Alan's shotgun is only slightly better than his revolver, and flare gun ammo is rare.

Both characters rely on items for healing:

  • Painkillers: Suitable for use during combat.
  • Trauma Pads: Usable in fights with brief respites or when retreating to a safe haven.
  • First Aid Kits: Provide full heals but take too long for combat use and occupy two inventory slots. Store them in the shoebox and use them in Break Rooms.

When playing as Saga, many combat encounters in the woods are random. If an encounter, such as with wolves, depletes too many resources, reloading a recent save from a Break Room may allow you to avoid the encounter entirely.
