Advanced Combat Strategies
Mastering combat in Alan Wake 2 involves more than just shooting; it requires tactical thinking and leveraging character-specific abilities. Don't waste ammunition on fully-shielded enemies, and never ignore manuscript pages as they often provide vital hints. Returning to previous areas with new abilities can unlock new combat advantages or pathways.
- General Combat Tips:
- Avoid wasting ammunition on fully-shielded enemies.
- Collect all manuscript pages for crucial hints.
- Revisit areas with new abilities to find new paths or resources.
- Saga's Combat:
- Saga's default pistol is not very effective, often requiring a full clip for basic enemies.
- She unlocks more effective weapons quickly.
- Stealth by switching off your torch and walking is generally ineffective for Saga due to acute enemy radar.
- Enemies aggroed by Saga will follow her even into Safe Havens; they do not despawn.
- Alan's Combat:
- Alan's .357 magnum is more effective, typically downing most enemies with three shots to the face.
- His shotgun is not significantly more effective than the revolver.
- Ammo for his flare gun is extremely rare.
- Stealth is a better option for Alan, especially with upgrades that reduce his visibility to enemies.
- Enemy Types and Strategies:
- Taken: Basic grunt enemies. Burn their protection with your torch, then shoot weak spots (head or glowing Source). Cultist varieties wear masks that block one headshot.
- Taken Thrower: Hang back and throw hatchets. Difficult to target. Stunning them with a torch splits them into two weaker enemies. The hunting rifle is best for taking them out from range before they aggro.
- Taken Bruiser: Tougher enemies with two-handed weapons. Attacks are easy to evade but deal massive damage if they connect. Use shotgun blasts to the head or weak spot when they are close.
- Taken Diver: Toughest non-boss enemies. Attack from range with damaging waves. If they grapple you, a Hand Flare is needed to break free. They can become invulnerable by folding in on themselves. Use the hunting rifle or crossbow from range, and a shotgun up close.
