How to Beat The Taken (General)
The Taken are the primary antagonists in Alan Wake, shadowy figures animated by the Dark Presence. Defeating them requires a specific strategy that combines the use of light and firearms. Understanding their behavior and exploiting their weaknesses is key to survival in Bright Falls.
The fundamental mechanic for dealing with The Taken is the interplay between Alan's flashlight and his weapons. The Taken are initially invulnerable to gunfire. Your flashlight's beam must be focused on them to burn away the darkness that shields them, making them susceptible to damage from your firearms. This process requires sustained exposure to light.
General Strategy for Fighting The Taken:
- Identify the Threat: Taken often appear as shadowy figures, sometimes with glowing eyes. Listen for their guttural growls and rustling sounds.
- Weaken with Light: Aim your flashlight directly at a Taken and hold the beam on them. You'll see the darkness recede from their bodies. This is indicated by visual cues and often a distinct sound effect.
- Expose and Shoot: Once the darkness is sufficiently burned away, the Taken will become visibly vulnerable. Immediately switch to your firearm and unload shots.
- Dodge and Reposition: Taken will attack relentlessly. Use your dodge maneuver (usually the B button or Spacebar) to evade their lunges and swings. Don't be afraid to retreat to a safer position if overwhelmed.
Variations and Tips:
- Melee Taken: These are the most common. They charge at you and attack with shadowy claws. Focus your light, then shoot.
- Ranged Taken: Some Taken will throw projectiles or use shadowy weapons from a distance. Prioritize taking them out quickly after weakening them.
- Heavy Taken: Larger, more resilient Taken may require more sustained light exposure and more ammunition.
- Groups: When facing multiple Taken, try to funnel them into a single area or use environmental hazards if available. Prioritize weakening and eliminating one at a time.
- Ammunition Conservation: Make your shots count after weakening them. Aim for headshots or weak points if they are apparent.
Mastering this light-and-shoot mechanic is the most crucial skill in Alan Wake. Practice it consistently, and you'll be able to overcome even the most persistent of the Taken.
