The Alien's AI is dynamic and learns. To manipulate it, avoid predictable patterns. Don't always hide in the same locker or use the same vent. Vary your distractions; sometimes a noisemaker, sometimes a flare. If it's searching a room, try to move to an adjacent one before it enters. The Alien is attracted to sound, but also to visual cues like your flashlight. Use this to your advantage by briefly flashing it to draw its attention away from your intended path, then quickly extinguishing it and hiding. It will investigate the last known location of the light.
