Hiding Spots & Cover

In the terrifying world of Amnesia: The Dark Descent, direct confrontation is rarely an option. Your primary means of survival against the castle's monstrous inhabitants is to hide. Mastering the art of finding and utilizing effective hiding spots and environmental cover is paramount to evading detection and staying alive when the lights go out.

Brennenburg Castle is littered with potential hiding places, ranging from simple crates and barrels to cramped closets and dark alcoves. The key is to use these not just as places to disappear, but as strategic points to observe enemy patrols and plan your next move. When an enemy is near, quickly ducking behind cover or slipping into a hiding spot can be the difference between life and death.

Effective Hiding Strategies:

Cramped Spaces: Closets, small rooms, and alcoves are excellent for breaking line of sight. Ensure the door can be closed quickly.
Behind Objects: Large crates, barrels, furniture, and even piles of debris can provide temporary cover.
Darkness: While darkness drains sanity, it also conceals you. However, be aware that enemies can still hear you, and some may be drawn to your presence.
Line of Sight: Always consider the enemy's field of vision. Hiding behind an object is only effective if it breaks their line of sight.
Sound Awareness: Enemies are highly sensitive to sound. Moving quietly is as important as finding a good hiding spot.

During certain encounters, such as the one triggered by Diary #8 in the Guest Room, you will be forced into hiding. The game often guides you towards these moments, emphasizing the need for immediate evasion. Picking up items like a crowbar or breaking a bottle to regain sanity can be done while in a safe position. Remember that enemies will often patrol an area after spotting you, so patience is key. Wait for them to move away before attempting to escape your hiding spot.
