Pro-Survival Tips & Hidden Secrets
To survive the depths of Brennenburg, you must master the game’s unseen variables. Use these advanced strategies and discovery tips to keep your sanity intact and uncover the castle's darkest mysteries.
Advanced Survival Strategies
- The Sanity Lean: Peeking around corners using the lean keys (Q/E) allows you to spot Gatherers without them detecting you. Looking directly at monsters drains sanity, so use peripheral vision to monitor their movement.
- Conservation Tactics: Never use Tinderboxes on every candle. Save them for large hubs or rooms where you must solve complex puzzles. In hallways, rely on your Lantern or "The Darkness" (your eyes will adjust after a moment in the dark).
- Aggro Reset: If a Gatherer spots you, breaking line of sight and hiding in a dark corner or inside a closet will usually cause them to despawn after a short patrol. Do not move or turn on your light until the music returns to a ambient drone.
- Sprinting vs. Stealth: Running generates significant noise. Only sprint when you are certain a monster is actively chasing you. Otherwise, crouching significantly reduces your detection radius.
Environmental Interactions
- Physics-Based Barricades: You can drag heavy objects like crates or desks in front of doors. While monsters will eventually break through, this buys you precious seconds to find a hiding spot or an exit.
- Dousing Lights: If you are being hunted in a room with a light source you previously lit, you can interact with the candle/torch to blow it out manually, plunging the area into darkness to hide.
Hidden Secrets and Easter Eggs
- The "Secret" Ending: During the final confrontation with Alexander in the Inner Sanctum, you can achieve a unique ending by knocking over the pillars charging his portal instead of following his or Agrippa’s instructions.
- Tinderbox Hoarding: There are over 150 Tinderboxes hidden throughout the game. If you explore thoroughly (checking behind crates and under fallen rubble), you will never truly run out of light.
- The Super Secret Room: By collecting all "Note to Self" fragments and certain artifacts, You can piece together the deeper tragedy of Daniel’s past before he arrived at the castle.
