Navigating Brennenburg Castle is a daunting task, especially with the lurking horrors and Daniel's deteriorating sanity. This section provides a detailed, step-by-step guide through each major area, highlighting critical items, puzzle solutions, and survival strategies. Remember to manage your sanity and oil levels carefully; light is your best friend, but also a beacon for danger.

The Entrance Hall & Wine Cellar

Your journey begins in the desolate Entrance Hall. Your immediate goal is to find a way into the Inner Sanctum. The main door is locked, requiring you to delve into the castle's depths.

  • Initial Exploration: From the Entrance Hall, head left into the Archive.
  • The Archive:
    • Locate the Tinderbox on the desk.
    • Find the Laudanum in the cabinet.
    • Read the Journal Entry on the desk to gain crucial backstory and objectives.
  • The Wine Cellar Entrance: Return to the Entrance Hall and proceed through the door on the right, leading to the Wine Cellar.
  • Wine Cellar Navigation: This area is dark and maze-like. Stick to the walls and use your lantern sparingly.
  • The Cellar Key: Your primary objective here is to find the Cellar Key. It's located on a shelf in a small alcove towards the back of the cellar. Be wary of falling debris and unsettling noises.
  • Opening the Wine Cellar Door: Use the Cellar Key to unlock the heavy wooden door at the far end of the Wine Cellar, leading to the next area.

The Back Hall & Storage

Beyond the Wine Cellar lies the Back Hall, a transitional area connecting to various storage rooms and ultimately, the Refinery.

  • Back Hall Exploration: The Back Hall itself offers little of immediate interest, but several doors branch off from it.
  • Storage Room (Left):
    • Enter the storage room on the left.
    • Collect the Tinderbox from the shelf.
    • A Laudanum can be found on a crate.
  • Storage Room (Right):
    • Enter the storage room on the right.
    • You'll find a Tinderbox on a barrel.
    • A Journal Entry is also present, providing more lore.
  • Towards the Refinery: Continue straight through the Back Hall until you reach a large, heavy door. This leads to the Refinery.

The Refinery

The Refinery is a critical area for progressing the main story, requiring you to activate the machinery to open the way forward. This area is also where you'll encounter your first significant environmental puzzle.

  • Initial Entry: Upon entering, you'll notice the machinery is dormant. Your goal is to get it running.
  • The Grinding Room:
    • Head into the Grinding Room.
    • Locate the Grinding Wheel. It's broken and needs to be replaced.
    • Find the New Grinding Wheel in a crate near the entrance to the Grinding Room.
    • Use the New Grinding Wheel to replace the broken one.
  • The Boiler Room:
    • Proceed to the Boiler Room.
    • Your objective here is to get the boiler operational.
    • Find the Coal Shovel leaning against the wall.
    • Locate the pile of Coal nearby and use the Coal Shovel to load coal into the boiler.
    • Next, you need to ignite the coal. Find the Flint and Steel on a shelf.
    • Use the Flint and Steel on the boiler to light the fire.
  • Activating the Machinery:
    • Return to the main Refinery area.
    • Locate the Main Valve on the central console.
    • Turn the Main Valve to start the machinery.
    • The path forward will now be accessible.
