The Cellar

Welcome, brave explorer, to the chilling depths of the Cellar. This section will guide you through its treacherous passages, ensuring you acquire all necessary items and avoid unnecessary encounters with the horrors that lurk within. Prepare for darkness, and keep your wits about you.

Initial Entry and Exploration

Upon entering the Cellar, you'll find yourself in a dimly lit, damp area. Your primary objective here is to locate key items for progression.

Light Source Management: Conserve your tinderboxes. The Cellar is vast and dark, and you'll need light for crucial puzzles and navigation. Only light candles or lanterns when absolutely necessary, and consider using your lantern sparingly.
First Steps: From the entrance, proceed cautiously. The path is relatively linear at first.
Storage Room (Optional): To your immediate left, you might notice a small storage area. Inside, you can often find a Tinderbox or two, and sometimes a bottle of Laudanum. It's worth a quick check, but don't linger.

The Wine Cellar and Lever Mechanism

Your main goal in this initial part of the Cellar is to access the deeper sections, which requires manipulating a lever mechanism.

Locating the Wine Cellar: Follow the main path until you reach a larger area with rows of wine racks. This is the Wine Cellar.
The Lever: On the far side of the Wine Cellar, you'll spot a large, rusty lever attached to a wall. This lever controls a gate that blocks your path forward.
Missing Part: Attempting to use the lever will reveal that a crucial gear or handle is missing, rendering it inoperable.
Finding the Missing Part:
- Search the Wine Racks: Carefully examine the wine racks themselves. The missing part, often a Rusty Cog or Lever Handle, is usually tucked away on one of the shelves, sometimes obscured by cobwebs or debris.
- Nearby Barrels: Check around any overturned barrels or crates in the vicinity of the lever.
- Strategy: Use your lantern to thoroughly sweep the area. The item is small and can be easily missed in the gloom.
Repairing the Lever: Once you have the missing part, approach the lever and use the item from your inventory to repair it.
Activating the Lever: Pull the lever. You'll hear the grinding of machinery as a nearby gate opens, granting you access to the next section of the Cellar.

Beyond the Gate: The Flooded Passage

The newly opened gate leads to a flooded passage, presenting new challenges.

Water Hazard: The water is deep in places, and moving through it will slow you down significantly. Be mindful of your sanity, as extended exposure to dark, watery environments can cause it to drop.
Hidden Items: Keep an eye out for floating debris or submerged crates. Often, you can find Tinderboxes or Oil for your lantern in these areas.
The Grate: Your path will eventually be blocked by a sturdy metal grate. This grate is locked and requires a specific tool to bypass.
Locating the Tool:
- Side Alcoves: Explore any small alcoves or side passages branching off the main flooded path.
- Submerged Chest: In one of these alcoves, you will find a partially submerged wooden chest. Open it to retrieve the Wrench.
- Strategy: The chest can be hard to spot in the murky water. Again, a thorough sweep with your lantern is recommended.
Opening the Grate: Return to the grate and use the Wrench on the bolts holding it in place. This will allow you to remove the grate and continue your journey deeper into the Cellar.

Proceed with caution. The Cellar holds more secrets and dangers as you delve further.
