2.11. Identifying Impostors: Red Flags

As a crewmate, your primary objective is to identify the impostors. This involves keen observation and the ability to recognize suspicious behavior, often referred to as 'red flags.' These are subtle (or not-so-subtle) actions or inactions that deviate from normal crewmate behavior and suggest a player might be an impostor. Learning to spot these red flags is crucial for survival and for winning the game.

Identifying impostors in Among Us is a process of elimination and pattern recognition. Red flags are behaviors that are inconsistent with a genuine crewmate's objectives and abilities. For instance, a player who consistently avoids tasks, lingers in hallways without purpose, or is always the last to respond to a sabotage might be an impostor. Impostors also have a tendency to be overly defensive when accused, or to make accusations themselves without solid evidence to deflect suspicion. Pay attention to who is seen near vents, who claims to have done tasks that don't progress the task bar, and who consistently votes with a suspicious player. Recognizing these patterns can help you build a case and confidently identify the threats.

  • Faking Tasks: Standing at a task station without the task bar moving.
  • Vent Proximity: Lingering near or entering vents.
  • Suspicious Movement: Wandering aimlessly, avoiding groups, or moving erratically.
  • Overly Defensive: Reacting aggressively to accusations without providing clear alibis.
  • Blame Shifting: Immediately accusing others without evidence.
  • Sabotage Evasion: Not responding to critical sabotages like O2 or Reactor.

Here are common red flags to watch for:

  1. The "Task Faker": Someone who stands at a task location for an unusually short or long time, or whose task bar doesn't move.
  2. The "Vent Watcher": A player who frequently pauses near vents, especially when alone.
  3. The "Accusation Spree": A player who immediately points fingers at others without any concrete evidence.
  4. The "Silent Accuser": Someone who votes for a player without explaining their reasoning.
  5. The "Sabotage Dodger": A player who is never seen helping to fix sabotages.
