3.5. Faking Tasks Convincingly
For Impostors, faking tasks is not just about standing at a task location; it's an art form. A convincing fake task requires understanding the game mechanics, player psychology, and the specific tasks on each map. The goal is to appear busy and productive, blending in with the Crewmates and avoiding suspicion.
Impostors don't actually perform tasks. Instead, they must simulate the actions of a Crewmate. This involves knowing where tasks are located, how long they typically take, and what animations (if any) are associated with them. A good Impostor will spend a believable amount of time at a task location, making it seem like they are genuinely working.
Understanding Task Mechanics:
- Task Durations: Some tasks are quick (e.g., swiping card), while others are longer (e.g., downloading data, fixing wires). Impostors should mimic these durations.
- Task Locations: Know the exact spots where tasks appear on the map.
- Task Chains: Be aware of tasks that require multiple steps or locations. An Impostor might pretend to do the first part of a chain.
- Visual Tasks: Never fake a visual task unless you are absolutely certain no one is watching, and even then, it's incredibly risky. If visual tasks are on, avoid these locations entirely.
Strategies for Convincing Fakes:
- Mimic Movement: When you approach a task location, move as if you are interacting with it. Don't just stand still.
- Time it Right: Spend a reasonable amount of time at the task. Too short looks suspicious, too long can also be odd if others are passing by.
- React to Others: If another player approaches while you're "faking," pretend to finish your task and move away naturally.
- Use Sabotages to Your Advantage: Sabotages can create chaos and distract Crewmates, giving you opportunities to move between "task" locations or escape after a kill.
- Have a Story: If questioned, have a plausible explanation for why you were at a certain task location. "I was doing the wires" or "I was downloading data."
- Don't Overdo It: Faking too many tasks or spending excessive time at one spot can draw attention.
Map-Specific Task Faking Tips:
- The Skeld: In Electrical, pretend to fix wires or download data. In Admin, pretend to swipe the card.
- Mira HQ: In Communications, pretend to upload or download data. In Launchpad, pretend to fuel engines.
- Polus: In Specimen Room, pretend to analyze samples. In Laboratory, pretend to calibrate distributor.
- Airship: In Cockpit, pretend to chart course. In Vault, pretend to sort cargo.
What to Avoid:
- Faking Visual Tasks: As mentioned, this is the quickest way to get caught.
- Standing in the wrong spot: Make sure you are positioned correctly for the task you are faking.
- Leaving too early: If a task is known to be long, leaving it after only a few seconds is suspicious.
- Not moving: Standing completely still for an extended period is a red flag.
By mastering the art of faking tasks, Impostors can effectively blend in, gain the trust of Crewmates, and create opportunities for kills. It requires observation, practice, and a bit of acting skill to pull off convincingly.
