What is a Shapeshifter?
A Shapeshifter is an Impostor who possesses the ability to change their appearance to match that of any living Crewmate. This transformation is temporary and has a cooldown period.
The Shapeshifter Ability
- Transformation: The Shapeshifter can activate their ability to change their appearance. A UI element will typically show available player models to mimic.
- Duration: The transformation lasts for a limited time. Once it expires, the Shapeshifter reverts to their original Impostor form.
- Cooldown: Like other Impostor abilities, there is a cooldown period after the transformation ends before the Shapeshifter can transform again.
- Visual Cue: When a Shapeshifter transforms or reverts, there might be a brief visual effect or sound, though this can vary.
- Mimicking: The Shapeshifter perfectly mimics the chosen Crewmate's color and hat.
Strategic Uses for Shapeshifters
The Shapeshifter's ability offers immense potential for deception:
- Framing Crewmates: Transform into a Crewmate, commit a kill, and then revert. The witness might accuse the innocent Crewmate you mimicked.
- Creating Alibis: Kill someone, then transform into another player and be seen elsewhere, making it seem impossible for you to have been the killer.
- Escaping Detection: If you're seen near a body or acting suspiciously, transforming can make witnesses doubt what they saw.
- Ambushing: Transform into a Crewmate who is known to be in a certain area, then wait in a vent or corner to ambush unsuspecting players.
- Confusing Witnesses: If a witness sees you kill, and then you immediately transform, they might become confused about who the real killer is.
- Sabotage Synergy: Combine transformations with sabotages to create complex scenarios where it's impossible to know who is who.
Playing as a Shapeshifter
- Master the Cooldown: Always be aware of your transformation and kill cooldowns.
- Choose Your Target Wisely: Don't just transform into anyone. Consider who is most likely to be believed or who is in a strategic location.
- Revert at the Right Time: Reverting too early or too late can expose you. Aim to revert when you are unobserved or in a place where your original Impostor form won't be immediately suspicious.
- Don't Overuse the Ability: Constant transformations can become predictable or lead to mistakes.
- Be Mindful of Visual Tasks: If you transform into someone doing a visual task, you will not be able to complete it.
Playing Against Shapeshifters (as Crewmate)
- Pay Attention to Details: Look for players who seem to be in two places at once, or who suddenly change appearance.
- Question Inconsistencies: If someone claims they were in one place but you saw them elsewhere (or saw someone who looked like them elsewhere), investigate.
- Trust Your Gut (but Verify): If something feels off about a player's behavior or appearance, try to gather more evidence.
- Observe Player Movement: If you see a player transform or revert, try to remember who they were before and after.
- Be Wary of "Stack Kills": A Shapeshifter might kill in a crowd, then transform and walk away, leaving witnesses confused.
