6.5. Other Official Roles Explained
Beyond the standard Crewmate and Impostor roles, Among Us has introduced official roles that add sificant complexity and strategic depth to the game. These roles, such as the Scientist, Engineer, and Guardian Angel, each possess unique abilities that can drastically alter gameplay dynamics and require players to adapt their strategies accordingly.
These official roles are typically found in the "Roles" section of the game settings, allowing hosts to customize their presence in a match. Understanding what each role does, how its abilities function, and how to counter or utilize them is crucial for both Crewmates and Impostors aiming for victory. They introduce new layers of information, defense, and offense.
The Scientist:
- Ability: The Scientist can access vitals at any time by tapping a button on their screen. Vitals show the status of all players (alive or dead).
- Strategy: A Scientist can be invaluable for detecting kills immediately. If a player suddenly drops dead, the Scientist can see it and report it, potentially catching the Impostor red-handed. They can also use vitals to track players who might be faking tasks or acting suspiciously.
- Impostor Counter: Impostors should be wary of the Scientist and try to kill them early if possible, or ensure they kill in a location where the Scientist cannot immediately see the death.
The Engineer:
- Ability: Engineers can use vents, just like Impostors. However, they can only use vents for a limited time before the vent system cools down for them.
- Strategy: Engineers can use vents for rapid movement across the map to complete tasks or to escape dangerous situations. They can also use vents to surprise Impostors or to quickly reach a body to report it.
- Impostor Counter: Impostors need to be aware that an Engineer might be using vents. If an Engineer is seen venting, they should be treated with extreme suspicion, as they might be an Impostor or a very risky Crewmate.
The Guardian Angel:
- Ability: Once a Guardian Angel is killed, they can still move around the map and protect living Crewmates by creating a temporary shield around them. This shield can block Impostor kills.
- Strategy: A deceased Guardian Angel's primary role is to prevent further kills. They can follow Crewmates and intervene if an Impostor attempts an attack. Their presence can deter Impostors from making risky kills.
- Impostor Counter: Impostors must be aware that a Guardian Angel might be present. If a kill attempt is blocked, they know a Guardian Angel is active and must find a way to bypass them or wait for the shield to dissipate.
Game Settings and Role Distribution:
The number of each role present in a game is determined by the host's settings. Hosts can choose to include none, one, or multiple of these roles, and can also specify how many of each role are assed. This allows for a wide variety of game experiences, from standard matches to highly chaotic ones.
Synergies and Counters:
- Scientist + Engineer: An Engineer can quickly vent to a location where the Scientist sees a death, allowing for immediate reporting and potential capture.
- Guardian Angel + Grouping: A Guardian Angel can provide an extra layer of protection for groups of Crewmates, making them harder targets.
- Impostor Focus: Impostors will often prioritize eliminating the Scientist to prevent immediate detection of kills.
These official roles add a dynamic layer to Among Us, transforming the game from a simple deduction puzzle into a more complex strategic battle. Mastering their use and understanding how to counter them is key to success in modern Among Us gameplay.
