Craft Your Way to Success: Essential Tools & Crafting

Master the art of crafting in Animal Crossing: New Horizons with our guide to essential tools. Learn how to acquire DIY recipes, gather materials, and craft everything from shovels to furniture to build your dream island.

Crafting is a fundamental mechanic in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, empowering you to create a vast array of items, from essential tools to decorative furniture and functional structures. The ability to craft your own goods sificantly reduces reliance on purchasing items and opens up a world of creative possibilities for personalizing your island. Understanding the crafting system, acquiring DIY recipes, and gathering the necessary materials are crucial steps for any aspiring island resident.

Your journey into crafting begins with your trusty NookPhone and the DIY Recipes app. Initially, you'll receive basic recipes from Tom Nook, but as you play, you'll discover many more ways to expand your crafting repertoire.

The Crafting Process:

  1. Acquire a DIY Recipe: You can obtain DIY recipes through various means:
    • Villagers: Often, villagers crafting at their homes will share a recipe with you if you speak to them.
    • Message Bottles: A message bottle containing a DIY recipe appears on your beach daily.
    • Balloon Presents: Shooting down balloons with your slingshot can yield DIY recipes.
    • Tom Nook/Isabelle: They may give you recipes for specific island milestones.
    • Seasonal Events: Special events often introduce unique seasonal DIY recipes.
    • Nook Miles Redemption: Certain recipe packs can be purchased with Nook Miles.
  2. Gather Materials: Once you have a recipe, you'll need the specified materials. These are gathered through daily island activities: wood from trees, stone and iron from rocks, shells from the beach, and various other items from fishing, bug catching, and more.
  3. Use a DIY Workbench: Crafting takes place at a DIY workbench. You start with a very basic one, but you can craft or acquire more elaborate ones. Resident Services also has a workbench available.
  4. Craft the Item: Interact with the workbench, select the recipe you wish to craft, and if you have the required materials, the item will be created.

Essential Tools and Their Crafting:

Your first crafting endeavors will likely focus on tools, which are vital for resource gathering and island interaction.

  • Flimsy Shovel: Crafted with 1 Fossil (initially) or 1 Iron Nugget. Used for digging up fossils, planting trees, and digging up items.
  • Flimsy Axe: Crafted with 3 branches. Used for chopping trees (yields wood) and hitting rocks.
  • Shovel: Crafted with 1 Flimsy Shovel and 1 Iron Nugget. More durable than the flimsy version.
  • Axe: Crafted with 1 Flimsy Axe and 3 Hardwood/Softwood. More durable than the flimsy version.
  • Fishing Rod: Available for purchase from Nook's Cranny or Tom Nook early on.
  • Net: Available for purchase from Nook's Cranny or Tom Nook early on.
  • Slingshot: Can be purchased or found. Used to shoot down balloons.

Upgrading Tools:

The 'Flimsy' tools are not very durable. You'll want to upgrade them as soon as possible. The primary method for upgrading is by crafting the next tier of tool using the previous tier and additional materials (usually Iron Nuggets). For example, crafting a Shovel requires a Flimsy Shovel and Iron Nuggets.

Beyond Tools: Furniture and Decorations

Once you have a handle on tool crafting, you can start creating furniture and decorative items. Many of the most sought-after items in the game are DIY recipes, allowing for unique customization of your home and island. Keep an eye out for new recipes daily, and don't hesitate to experiment with the crafting system!
