Island Life 101: Your First Days
Welcome to your new island home, prospective island representative! The initial days in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are crucial for setting up your island, understanding the basic mechanics, and beginning your journey towards a five-star paradise. This section will guide you through the very first steps, from choosing your island layout to gathering essential resources and interacting with your first animal neighbors. By following these steps, you'll establish a strong foundation for your island life, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience as you settle in.
Your first few days will primarily involve fulfilling tasks for Tom Nook, learning how to gather resources, and starting to customize your personal space. Don't feel pressured to rush; Animal Crossing is a game desed for relaxation and discovery. Take your time, explore your island, and get acquainted with its unique features and inhabitants. This guide will help you prioritize your activities to maximize your early progress and unlock key features quickly.
Choosing Your Island Layout
Upon starting a new game, you'll be presented with several island layout options. While terraforming eventually allows for sificant changes, your initial layout determines the permanent river mouths and the location of the Resident Services building. Consider the following:
- River Mouths: These are fixed. Think about how many you want and where they are located.
- Resident Services: This building cannot be moved. Its central location is often preferred for accessibility.
- Ponds and Cliffs: While these can be altered later, a layout with a good mix can offer immediate aesthetic appeal and resource variety.
Don't overthink this too much, as the game offers immense customization later on. Pick a layout that feels good to you, and remember that every island is unique and beautiful in its own way.
Meeting Your Neighbors and Tom Nook
After landing, you'll be greeted by Tom Nook and two random animal villagers who will be your first island residents. Tom Nook will guide you through the initial setup, including:
- Setting Up Your Tent: Choose a spot for your tent. Consider proximity to Resident Services and potential future building locations. You can move your tent later, but it costs Bells.
- Setting Up Villager Tents: Help your two starting villagers find spots for their tents. Try to place them in areas that won't obstruct future development.
- The NookPhone: Tom Nook will give you your NookPhone, an essential tool for accessing apps like the Nook Miles program, your inventory, and the camera.
Gathering Essential Resources
Your first major task will be to gather resources to craft basic tools. You'll need:
- Tree Branches: Shake trees to make branches fall. You'll need these for flimsy tools.
- Wood (Hardwood, Wood, Softwood): Use a flimsy axe (once crafted) to chop trees. Each tree can yield up to three pieces of wood per day.
- Stone: Hit rocks with a flimsy axe or shovel. Each rock can yield up to eight resources (stone, clay, iron nugget, or even Bells) if hit quickly enough.
- Weeds: Pick up weeds scattered around your island. These can be sold for a small amount of Bells or used in crafting.
Tip: To maximize resources from rocks, dig two holes behind you before hitting the rock. This prevents recoil and allows you to hit the rock eight times consecutively.
Crafting Your First Tools
Head to the workbench in Resident Services to craft your first tools. Tom Nook will provide you with the DIY recipes for:
- Flimsy Axe: Requires 5x Tree Branch, 1x Stone. Use this to chop wood from trees.
- Flimsy Fishing Rod: Requires 5x Tree Branch. Use this to catch fish.
- Flimsy Net: Requires 5x Tree Branch. Use this to catch bugs.
- Flimsy Shovel: Requires 5x Hardwood. Use this to dig up fossils, plant trees, and hit rocks.
- Flimsy Watering Can: Requires 5x Softwood. Use this to water flowers.
These flimsy tools will break after a few uses, so be prepared to craft more or upgrade them later.
Paying Off Your Tent Loan
Tom Nook will present you with your first loan: 5,000 Nook Miles for your tent. You can earn Nook Miles by completing various tasks listed on your NookPhone's Nook Miles app. Focus on:
- Catching fish and bugs.
- Picking up weeds.
- Chopping wood and hitting rocks.
- Talking to your villagers.
Once you've accumulated 5,000 Nook Miles, talk to Tom Nook at Resident Services to pay off your loan. This will unlock the ability to upgrade to a house, which comes with storage and a much larger loan in Bells!
