You'll arrive on a deserted island, meet your fellow residents, and begin to understand the rhythm of island life. This section will guide you through those initial, exciting steps, from setting up your tent to gathering essential resources and making your first contributions to the island community.

You'll also have a clear path forward for expanding your island and attracting new residents. Prepare to get your hands dirty, meet some charming new friends, and take the first exciting steps towards creating the island of your dreams!

This chapter will cover your initial arrival, the first interactions with Tom Nook, setting up your tent, and the crucial early tasks that unlock further progression. We'll focus on efficient resource collection, understanding the Nook Miles system, and preparing for the island's first major upgrades. Get ready to embrace the simple, yet deeply rewarding, life of an island representative!

Your First Steps on the Island

Upon your arrival, you'll be greeted by Tom Nook and his assistants, Timmy and Tommy. After a brief orientation, you'll be tasked with choosing your island's layout. While not permanent, consider the river mouths and plaza location carefully, as these cannot be changed later without sificant terraforming. Once your island is chosen, you'll be given a tent and asked to select a spot for it. Choose wisely, as moving it later costs Bells!

Next, you'll need to help your two initial animal neighbors set up their tents. Talk to them, and they'll ask for your assistance. After everyone is settled, head back to the Resident Services tent. Tom Nook will then give you a NookPhone, your essential tool for island life. This phone contains apps like the Camera, Nook Miles, Critterpedia, and more. Your first major task will be to gather resources to pay off your initial tent loan of 5,000 Nook Miles.

To earn Nook Miles, complete the tasks listed in your Nook Miles app. Focus on activities like:

  • Catching 5 fish (use the Flimsy Fishing Rod provided)
  • Catching 5 bugs (use the Flimsy Net provided)
  • Chopping wood (use the Flimsy Axe provided)
  • Collecting fruit
  • Weeding

Once you've accumulated 5,000 Nook Miles, speak to Tom Nook to pay off your loan. This unlocks the ability to upgrade your tent to a house, a sificant milestone!

Crafting Essentials and Resource Gathering

Crafting is a core mechanic in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and you'll be doing a lot of it in this first act. Tom Nook will provide you with your first DIY recipes, including the Flimsy Axe, Flimsy Fishing Rod, and Flimsy Net. To craft, you'll need to gather specific materials:

  1. Wood: Hit trees with your axe. There are three types: Wood, Hardwood, and Softwood. Each tree can yield up to three pieces of wood per day without being chopped down.
  2. Stone: Hit rocks with your axe or shovel. Rocks can yield up to eight materials (stone, clay, iron nugget, or even a Bell bag) if hit quickly enough without moving.
  3. Weeds: Simply pick them up from the ground. They are a common crafting material and can be sold for a small amount of Bells.
  4. Tree Branches: Shake trees to make them fall.

Always carry a few spare tools, especially the Flimsy Axe, as they break easily. You can craft new ones at the DIY workbench in Resident Services or at one you craft yourself. Prioritize crafting a Flimsy Shovel and Flimsy Watering Can as soon as you get the DIY recipes, as these will open up more resource gathering opportunities and allow you to start gardening.

Tip: When hitting rocks, dig holes behind you to prevent recoil and allow you to hit the rock all eight times in quick succession, maximizing your material yield.
