Anno 1404 features a tiered population system, starting with Peasants and progressing through Citizens, Patricians, Nobles, and eventually, the Oriental population tiers: Nomads and Envoys. Each tier has specific needs that must be met for them to upgrade to the next tier and for their happiness to remain high. Peasants, for example, require Fish, Cider, and a Chapel. As they upgrade to Citizens, they will demand more sophisticated goods like Spices, Clothes, and access to a Tavern. Failing to meet these needs will result in unhappiness, reduced tax income, and eventually, citizens moving out. The key to success is to anticipate these needs and establish production chains in advance. The 'Needs' tab in a residential building's information panel provides a clear overview of what your citizens require. Balancing production with population growth is a continuous challenge and a core aspect of the game's economy.
