Resource Management
Effective resource management is the bedrock of a thriving empire in Anno 1404. Without a steady supply chain, your citizens will quickly become discontent, leading to economic collapse. This section will guide you through the intricacies of acquiring, producing, and distributing essential goods.
Early Game Essentials (Pioneers & Settlers)
Your initial focus should be on satisfying the basic needs of your Pioneer and Settler populations. These goods are relatively simple to produce and form the foundation of your economy.
- Food:
- Fish: The easiest and earliest food source. Build a Fisherman's Hut on the coastline. Ensure it has access to open water. One hut typically supports a small number of Pioneers. As your population grows, you'll need more.
- Farm Products (Grain/Hemp): Once you advance to Settlers, you'll need more diverse food. Grain is crucial for bread. Hemp is for clothes. Locate fertile land (indicated by green squares when placing a farm) and build Grain Farms and Hemp Plantations. Remember that farms require a Farmhouse to operate.
- Drinks:
- Cider: Produced from Apples. Build Apple Plantations on fertile land. Like other farms, they need a Farmhouse. Cider is a key drink for Pioneers and Settlers.
- Clothes:
- Linen Garments: Produced from Hemp. Once you have a steady supply of Hemp from your Hemp Plantations, build a Weaver's Hut. The Weaver's Hut will convert Hemp into Linen Garments.
- Building Materials:
- Wood: Essential for almost all early construction. Build a Lumberjack's Hut in a forested area. Place a Sawmill nearby to convert logs into usable Wood planks. Ensure a clear path for carts between the Lumberjack's Hut and the Sawmill.
- Stone: Needed for more advanced buildings and fortifications. Locate a stone deposit (rocky outcrops) and build a Stone Quarry.
Advanced Production Chains (Citizens & Merchants)
As your population evolves to Citizens and Merchants, their demands become more complex, requiring multi-step production chains.
- Bread:
- Grain Farm (produces Grain) -> Mill (converts Grain to Flour) -> Bakery (converts Flour to Bread).
- Strategy: Group these buildings together to minimize travel time for carts. Ensure sufficient storage at each step.
- Spices:
- Spices are an Oriental good. You will need to establish trade routes with the Orient to acquire Spice Seeds. Once you have the seeds, build Spice Plantations on fertile Oriental islands.
- Trade Route Management: Set up a ship to regularly transport Spices from your Oriental island to your main city's warehouse.
- Leather Jerkins:
- Cattle Farm (produces Cattle) -> Tannery (converts Cattle to Leather) -> Leather Workshop (converts Leather to Leather Jerkins).
- Strategy: Cattle Farms require significant space. Plan your island layout accordingly.
- Tools:
- Iron Mine (extracts Iron Ore) -> Charcoal Burner's Hut (produces Coal from Wood) -> Smelter (converts Iron Ore and Coal to Iron) -> Toolmaker's Workshop (converts Iron to Tools).
- Location: Iron Mines can only be built on specific iron deposits, often found in mountainous regions. Charcoal Burners need access to forests.
- Importance: Tools are vital for constructing many advanced buildings and for maintaining existing ones. A shortage of tools can cripple your expansion.
Optimizing Production and Distribution
Efficient resource flow is key to success. Consider these strategies:
- Warehouse Placement: Build warehouses strategically near production chains and residential areas to minimize transport distances. Upgrade warehouses to increase storage capacity and the number of available carts.
- Production Ratios: Understand the production ratios. For example, one Mill might supply two Bakeries. Monitor your production statistics (accessible via the warehouse or individual building menus) to identify bottlenecks and overproduction. Adjust the number of production buildings accordingly.
- Fertility and Deposits: Always prioritize islands with suitable fertility for your desired crops and rich mineral deposits. Use the "Show Fertility" and "Show Deposits" overlays on the minimap to scout potential settlement locations.
- Trade Routes: As your empire expands, establishing reliable trade routes between your islands and with other factions (like Lord Northburgh or the Grand Vizier) becomes crucial.
- Internal Trade: Use your own ships to transport goods between your islands. Configure trade routes in the ship's menu, specifying goods and quantities.
- External Trade: Buy and sell surplus goods at other faction's warehouses to balance your economy and acquire resources you cannot produce yourself.
- Storage Management: Keep an eye on your warehouse levels. If a good is consistently full, you might be overproducing or have insufficient consumption. If it's consistently empty, you have a shortage. Adjust production or trade routes as needed.
