Military and Combat

While Anno 1404 is primarily a city-building and economic simulation game, understanding its military and combat mechanics is crucial for protecting your burgeoning empire, expanding your influence, and dealing with hostile AI opponents or other players. This section will guide you through the intricacies of naval and land warfare, unit management, and strategic considerations.

Naval Combat: Controlling the Seas

Naval combat is often the most critical aspect of Anno 1404's military game. Control of trade routes and access to valuable resources hinges on a strong fleet.

Ship Types and Roles

  • Small Trading Ship: While primarily for trade, these can be equipped with a single cannon for basic defense against pirates or other small threats. Not recommended for direct combat.
  • Oriental Trading Ship: Similar to the Small Trading Ship, but faster and with more cargo space. Can also be armed defensively.
  • Occidental War Cog: Your early-game dedicated warship. Equipped with multiple cannons, it's effective against other Cogs and smaller vessels. Essential for clearing pirate nests.
  • Oriental Warship: A faster and more agile warship than the Occidental War Cog, with good firepower. Excellent for hit-and-run tactics and engaging multiple targets.
  • Large Occidental Warship: The pinnacle of Occidental naval power. Heavily armored and bristling with cannons, these are slow but devastating in a direct confrontation. Best used in formations.
  • Flagship: Your starting vessel. While it has some defensive capabilities, its primary role is exploration and establishing your first warehouse. Losing it can be a significant setback, so keep it safe.

Naval Combat Strategies

Effective naval combat in Anno 1404 relies on positioning, fleet composition, and understanding unit strengths and weaknesses.

  • Focus Fire: Concentrate the fire of multiple ships on a single enemy vessel to quickly eliminate threats. A damaged ship deals less damage and is easier to sink.
  • Flanking Maneuvers: Position your ships to attack enemy vessels from multiple sides. This can prevent them from escaping and allows you to bring more cannons to bear.
  • Protect Trading Routes: Assign a few Occidental War Cogs or Oriental Warships to patrol your vital trade routes to deter pirates and hostile AI.
  • Repair at Sea: Damaged ships can be repaired at your own warehouses or by using Repair Kits, which can be purchased from various traders or produced in your cities. Always carry some on your warships.
  • Blockades: Use your fleet to blockade an enemy's harbor, preventing their trade ships from leaving or entering. This can cripple their economy and force them to surrender.
  • Pirate Hunting: Pirates, like Hassan ben Sahid, can be a persistent nuisance. Build a strong fleet of Occidental War Cogs early on and actively hunt down their pirate dens to secure your waters. Destroying a pirate den requires sustained naval bombardment.

Land Combat: Securing Your Islands

Land combat is less frequent than naval engagements but is crucial for defending your settlements, conquering enemy islands, or dealing with specific quest objectives. Unlike naval units, land units are primarily used for occupation and defense rather than direct battle.

Land Unit Types

  • Occidental Troops (Militia): These are your basic land units, recruited from your Occidental cities. They are effective for occupying neutral islands, defending your own, and engaging in basic skirmishes. They are produced in the Barracks.
  • Oriental Troops (Assassins): More specialized and powerful than Occidental Troops, Assassins are excellent for quickly taking over enemy buildings and are more effective in direct combat. They are recruited from your Oriental cities once you have established a Vizier's Palace.

Land Combat Strategies

Land combat in Anno 1404 is less about direct unit control and more about strategic deployment and overwhelming force.

  • Occupation: To claim a neutral island or conquer an enemy island, you must land troops near their warehouse or the island's center. Once landed, your troops will automatically move to occupy the island. The number of troops required depends on the size of the island and any existing defenses.
  • Defensive Structures:
    • Watchtowers: Basic defensive structures that fire arrows at approaching enemy units. Place them strategically around your warehouse and key production buildings.
    • Fortifications: More advanced defensive structures that offer stronger protection and can house a small garrison of troops. Build these around your main city to deter land invasions.
    • Walls: While not directly combat units, walls can funnel enemy troops into kill zones and slow their advance, giving your Watchtowers and Fortifications more time to inflict damage.
  • Transporting Troops: Land units are transported via your ships. Select a ship and then click on the "Load Troops" button to embark your units. Once at the destination island, click "Unload Troops" to deploy them.
  • Conquering Enemy Islands:
    1. Naval Superiority: First, establish complete naval control around the target island to prevent reinforcements and protect your transport ships.
    2. Bombardment (Optional): If the enemy has significant coastal defenses, consider bombarding them with your warships before landing troops.
    3. Land Troops: Transport a sufficient number of Occidental or Oriental Troops to the island. Aim to land them as close to the enemy warehouse as possible.
    4. Capture Buildings: Your troops will automatically engage enemy units and attempt to capture buildings. The primary objective is to capture the enemy's warehouse, which will then make the island yours.

Diplomacy and Espionage (Indirect Combat)

While not direct combat, diplomacy and espionage can be powerful tools to weaken your opponents without firing a single shot.

  • Treaties: Sign trade agreements, alliances, or even declarations of war with other factions. Alliances can bring allies to your aid in times of conflict.
  • Spies: Recruit spies from the Spy Guild (unlocked at Patrician level). Spies can be sent to enemy cities to perform various sabotage missions:
    • Arson: Set fire to enemy buildings, disrupting production and requiring resources for repair.
    • Poison Well: Spread disease among enemy populations, decreasing productivity and happiness.
    • Sabotage Production: Temporarily halt production in a specific enemy building.
    • Steal Blueprints: Acquire blueprints for enemy buildings, allowing you to construct them yourself.
  • Bribes: Bribe enemy fleets or officials to turn a blind eye to your actions or even switch allegiance.

Mastering these military and combat aspects will ensure your empire not only thrives economically but also stands resilient against any threats that may arise in the world of Anno 1404.
