Game Speed & Pause
Mastering the flow of time in Anno 1800 is crucial for both new and veteran players. The game offers flexible options to control the speed of your empire's development, allowing you to react to crises, plan complex production chains, or simply enjoy the fruits of your labor. Understanding these controls will significantly enhance your gameplay experience.
Controlling Game Speed
Anno 1800 provides several game speed settings, accessible directly from the main interface. These settings dictate how quickly in-game time passes, affecting everything from production cycles and trade route durations to population growth and event triggers.
- Normal Speed (Hotkey: 1): This is the default speed, suitable for most general gameplay. It allows for a balanced pace, giving you enough time to manage your islands without feeling rushed.
- Fast Speed (Hotkey: 2): When you're confident in your infrastructure and want to accelerate progress, Fast Speed is your go-to. It's particularly useful during periods of stable income, when waiting for construction to complete, or when your trade ships are on long voyages. Be mindful, however, that events and crises will also unfold more rapidly.
- Very Fast Speed (Hotkey: 3): The highest available speed, Very Fast is best reserved for moments when you need to quickly pass large amounts of in-game time. This could be to accumulate significant wealth, wait for a specific item to appear at an NPC trader (like Archibald Blake or Madame Kahina), or when you've set up extensive passive income streams and want to see the numbers roll in. Use with caution, as unexpected issues can escalate quickly at this speed.
You can switch between these speeds at any time by clicking the corresponding icons in the bottom-left corner of your screen, next to the in-game clock, or by using the designated hotkeys (1, 2, 3).
The Pause Function
The ability to pause the game is an invaluable tool in Anno 1800, especially when dealing with complex situations or making critical decisions. Unlike simply reducing game speed, pausing completely halts all in-game actions, giving you unlimited time to strategize.
- Activating Pause (Hotkey: P or Spacebar): You can pause the game by clicking the pause icon (often represented by two vertical lines) located near the game speed controls, or by pressing the 'P' key or the 'Spacebar'.
- Strategic Uses of Pause:
- Crisis Management: When a fire breaks out, a riot erupts, or a critical production chain collapses, pausing allows you to assess the damage, allocate resources, and issue commands without the situation worsening.
- Complex Planning: Before embarking on a major construction project, optimizing a trade route, or reorganizing an entire island's layout, pause the game. This gives you time to meticulously plan your next moves, place blueprints, and queue up construction orders without the pressure of a ticking clock.
- Information Gathering: Need to check the needs of a new population tier, review your current income/expenses, or analyze the statistics of a specific factory? Pause the game to browse menus and tooltips at your leisure.
- Multi-Tasking: If you need to step away from the game for a moment, pausing ensures that your empire remains exactly as you left it, preventing any unforeseen problems from developing in your absence.
- Unpausing: To resume the game, simply click the play icon (a right-facing triangle) or press 'P'/'Spacebar' again. The game will resume at the speed it was set to before pausing.
Remember, effective use of game speed and the pause function is a hallmark of a skilled Anno 1800 player. Don't hesitate to slow down or pause when overwhelmed, and feel free to speed up when your empire is running smoothly and you're ready for the next challenge!
