Quest: Powering the Future
The "Powering the Future" questline is a pivotal moment in your Anno 1800 campaign, marking the transition to advanced industrialization and the demands of your burgeoning population. Successfully completing this quest unlocks significant productivity bonuses and is essential for progressing to higher-tier residential buildings like Engineers and Investors. This guide will walk you through every step, from initial requirements to optimizing your power grid.
Phase 1: The Call for Power
As your population of Artisans grows and their needs become more sophisticated, you will eventually unlock the Engineer tier. Upon reaching a certain threshold of Engineers (typically around 750-1000 on your main island), the "Powering the Future" quest will automatically trigger. Sir Archibald Blake, or a similar NPC depending on your game's progression, will issue a plea for a reliable energy source to fuel the next industrial revolution.
- Trigger Condition: Approximately 750-1000 Engineers on your main island.
- NPC Initiator: Sir Archibald Blake (or relevant quest-giver).
- Initial Objective: Investigate new energy sources.
Phase 2: Discovering Oil
The quest will direct you to explore potential oil reserves. In Anno 1800, oil is exclusively found in the New World. You will need to have established a colony there and explored its islands sufficiently.
- Expedition to the New World: If you haven't already, send an expedition to the New World to establish a foothold.
- Island Exploration: Once in the New World, use your ships to explore uncharted islands. Keep an eye out for islands with visible oil deposits (dark, oily patches on the ground, often near coastlines).
- Claiming an Oil Island: Settle an island with oil deposits. Prioritize islands with multiple deposits for future expansion.
- Building an Oil Harbour: Construct an Oil Harbour on your chosen New World island. This special harbour is required for oil extraction and loading onto tankers.
Phase 3: Establishing Oil Production
With an Oil Harbour in place, you can begin the process of extracting and transporting oil.
- Oil Wells: Build Oil Wells directly on the oil deposits you discovered. Each well extracts crude oil.
- Oil Refinery: Construct an Oil Refinery. This building processes crude oil into fuel. Place it strategically near your Oil Wells to minimize transport distances.
- Oil Tankers: You will need to acquire Oil Tankers. These specialized ships are the only vessels capable of transporting oil. You can build them at your Shipyard once the Engineer tier is sufficiently developed.
- Trade Route Setup: Establish a trade route between your New World oil production island and your Old World main island.
- Loading Port: Your New World Oil Harbour. Load "Oil" onto the tanker.
- Unloading Port: Your Old World main island's harbour. Unload "Oil."
- Frequency: Adjust the number of tankers and route frequency to ensure a steady supply. Oil consumption can be high!
Phase 4: Building the Power Plant
Once oil is reliably flowing into your Old World, you can construct the centerpiece of this quest: the Power Plant.
- Unlock Condition: Sufficient Engineers and a steady supply of Oil.
- Construction: Build a Power Plant on your main island. Power Plants are large and require significant space.
- Cost: Typically 10,000-15,000 coins, 20 Steel Beams, 10 Windows, 10 Advanced Weapons.
- Maintenance: High ongoing maintenance costs.
- Oil Delivery: Ensure the Power Plant has a direct road connection to your main harbour where the oil tankers unload. Oil will automatically be transported from the harbour to the Power Plant.
Phase 5: Powering Your City
The Power Plant generates electricity, but it needs to be distributed. This is done via Power Lines.
- Power Line Construction: Lay down Power Lines from your Power Plant to your industrial buildings and residential areas.
- Coverage: Power Lines have a limited range. You'll need to build a network to cover all desired buildings.
- Effect: Buildings within the Power Plant's radius and connected by Power Lines receive a significant productivity boost (typically +50% to +100%). Residential buildings also gain a happiness bonus and unlock new needs.
- Quest Completion: Once your Power Plant is operational and supplying electricity to a certain number of buildings, the "Powering the Future" quest will automatically complete.
Rewards for Completion
Upon successfully powering your city, you will receive:
- Experience Points: Significant XP for your profile.
- Influence: A boost to your Influence points, crucial for expanding your empire.
- Unlocks: Full access to advanced Engineer and Investor needs, further industrial buildings, and potentially unique items or specialists.
- Productivity Boost: The primary reward is the permanent productivity increase for all powered factories, drastically improving your economy.
Strategy Tips & Common Pitfalls
- Oil Supply is Key: Underestimating oil consumption is a common mistake. Monitor your oil levels constantly. A single Power Plant can consume a lot, and multiple plants will multiply that demand.
- Tanker Capacity: Invest in larger oil tankers as soon as they are available to reduce the number of ships needed and improve efficiency.
- Power Plant Placement:
- Place Power Plants centrally within your industrial zones to maximize coverage with minimal Power Lines.
- Consider placing them near your main harbour for easy oil delivery.
- Be mindful of pollution; Power Plants generate significant pollution, which can negatively impact residential happiness if too close.
- Power Line Efficiency: Design your Power Line network logically. Avoid long, winding routes. Use crossroads and junctions effectively.
- Multiple Power Plants: As your city grows, you will inevitably need multiple Power Plants to cover all your industrial and residential areas. Plan for this expansion early.
- New World Expansion: Secure multiple oil islands in the New World if possible. This provides redundancy and allows for increased oil production as your Old World demands grow.
- Specialists: Look for specialists (e.g., from quests, item drops, or traders) who can reduce oil consumption in Power Plants or boost oil well output. These can be game-changers for efficiency.
