Combat Strategies for Specific Enemy Types
As Ezio Auditore da Firenze, you'll face a diverse array of foes across Renaissance Italy. Each enemy type presents unique challenges and requires specific tactical approaches. Mastering these strategies will ensure your survival and efficiency in combat.
Standard Militia & Guards
These are the most common enemies you'll encounter. While individually weak, they can overwhelm Ezio in numbers. They typically wield short swords or spears.
- Strategy:
- Counter-Attack: This is your bread and butter. Wait for their attack, press the Counter button (usually R2/RT + Square/X), and Ezio will often dispatch them in one swift move.
- Disarm: Against spear-wielding guards, a well-timed Disarm (R2/RT + Triangle/Y) can turn their weapon against them, often leading to an instant kill or leaving them vulnerable.
- Smoke Bombs: In larger groups, a Smoke Bomb can disorient them, allowing for easy assassinations or a quick escape. Purchase these from Blacksmiths in Florence, Venice, or Forlì.
- Hidden Blade: For isolated targets, a quick Hidden Blade assassination is always the most efficient and silent option.
- Recommended Gear: Any sword will suffice, but the Venetian Longsword (available from Venice Blacksmiths after Sequence 8) offers increased damage for quicker engagements.
Brutes
These heavily armored guards are slow but hit hard. They are easily identified by their large size and two-handed weapons, often axes or greatswords.
- Strategy:
- Dodge & Attack: Brutes cannot be directly counter-attacked. Instead, dodge their slow, powerful swings (X/A button) and then immediately follow up with an attack.
- Disarm: This is highly effective. Disarming a Brute will often cause them to stumble, leaving them open for a quick kill with their own weapon or Ezio's Hidden Blade.
- Poison Blade: If you have the Poison Blade (unlocked during Sequence 5), a single dose will slowly incapacitate a Brute, making them easy prey for a follow-up attack or a quick Hidden Blade kill. Purchase poison vials from Doctors.
- Environmental Kills: Look for opportunities to push Brutes off ledges or into water.
- Recommended Gear: The Condottiero Warhammer (purchased from Blacksmiths after Sequence 9) can stagger Brutes more effectively.
Seekers
Seekers are agile and carry daggers. They are adept at dodging and can be frustrating in groups.
- Strategy:
- Counter-Attack: Seekers are vulnerable to counter-attacks, but their quick movements can make timing tricky. Practice makes perfect.
- Throwing Knives: A well-aimed Throwing Knife (purchased from Blacksmiths) can interrupt their attacks or even kill them outright if they are already damaged.
- Kick: A kick (Circle/B button) can momentarily stun Seekers, allowing Ezio to follow up with a quick combo.
- Hidden Blade: If you can get close, a quick Hidden Blade assassination is ideal.
- Recommended Gear: The Florentine Dagger (available early in the game) offers quick attack speed, complementing Ezio's agility against these foes.
Archers
Found on rooftops and high vantage points, archers pose a threat from a distance, especially when Ezio is engaged in ground combat.
- Strategy:
- Prioritize: Always eliminate archers first if possible. Their arrows can interrupt Ezio's combos and damage him significantly.
- Climb & Assassinate: The most effective method is to climb to their position and perform an aerial or stealth assassination.
- Throwing Knives: From a safe distance, Throwing Knives can dispatch archers quickly and silently. Aim for the head for an instant kill.
- Crossbow: Once unlocked (during Sequence 6), the Crossbow is an excellent tool for silently eliminating archers from a distance. Purchase bolts from Blacksmiths.
- Recommended Gear: The Venetian Crossbow (purchased from Venice Blacksmiths after Sequence 8) offers improved accuracy and range.
Agiles (Prowlers)
These fast-moving enemies are often found on rooftops or patrolling narrow streets. They are lightly armored and carry small blades.
- Strategy:
- Counter-Attack: Agiles are highly susceptible to counter-attacks due to their aggressive, straightforward approach.
- Grapple/Throw: Ezio can grapple (Circle/B button) and throw Agiles into other enemies or off ledges, making them useful for crowd control.
- Hidden Blade: Their light armor makes them easy targets for a quick Hidden Blade assassination if you can get close.
- Smoke Bombs: A Smoke Bomb can disorient them, allowing for easy assassinations or a quick escape.
- Recommended Gear: Any sword or the Hidden Blade is effective.
Papal Guards (Elite Guards)
These are the toughest enemies in the game, encountered primarily in Rome and during later sequences. They are heavily armored, skilled fighters, and often appear in groups with other enemy types.
- Strategy:
- Disarm: This is your best friend against Papal Guards. Disarming them will often lead to an instant kill with their own weapon.
- Poison Blade: A single dose of poison will slowly weaken them, making them easier to dispatch.
- Smoke Bombs & Assassinate: In groups, a Smoke Bomb followed by rapid Hidden Blade assassinations is incredibly effective.
- Bodyguard Diversion: If you have hired Mercenaries, direct them to engage the Papal Guards while you flank or use stealth.
- Environmental Kills: Look for opportunities to push them into water or off high places.
- Recommended Gear:
- Sword of Altaïr: The most powerful sword in the game, obtained by collecting all 100 Feathers and placing them in the chest at the Villa Auditore. Its high damage output is crucial against these formidable foes.
- Armor of Altaïr: While not a weapon, this armor (unlocked by completing all six Assassin Tombs) significantly increases Ezio's defense, allowing him to withstand more hits during prolonged engagements.
Special Considerations
- Medicine: Always carry a full stock of Medicine (purchased from Doctors) to heal during combat, especially against tougher enemies or large groups.
- Money: Keep your coffers full to purchase new weapons, armor, and consumables. Renovating the Villa Auditore's economy will provide a steady income.
- Practice: The best way to master combat is through practice. Engage in street brawls and challenge yourself against different enemy combinations.
