Enemy Types & Weaknesses

Navigating the treacherous streets and rooftops of Renaissance Italy requires more than just a hidden blade; it demands an understanding of your adversaries. This section details the various enemy types you'll encounter, their unique combat behaviors, and the most effective strategies to dispatch them, ensuring Ezio Auditore da Firenze remains undetected and deadly.

Standard Guards (Militia)

  • Description: These are the most common enemies you'll face, typically armed with a short sword and light armor. They patrol in small groups and are easily distracted.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Counter-Attack: The most reliable method. Wait for their attack, press the counter button (Square/X on PlayStation/Xbox, respectively), and follow up with an immediate kill.
    • Hidden Blade: A single Hidden Blade assassination from stealth or a well-timed counter-kill is instantly lethal.
    • Disarm: Against multiple standard guards, disarming one (Circle/B on PlayStation/Xbox, then Square/X) allows Ezio to use their weapon against them, often leading to a one-hit kill.
    • Environmental Kills: Lure them near ledges or water for quick, silent eliminations.
  • Strategy: For groups, prioritize stealth assassinations from rooftops or haystacks. In open combat, focus on chaining counter-kills. If outnumbered, use smoke bombs to disorient them and escape or perform quick assassinations.

Brutes (Heavy Guards)

  • Description: Easily identifiable by their heavy plate armor and large, two-handed weapons (axes or greatswords). They are slow but hit hard and cannot be counter-killed directly with the Hidden Blade.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Disarm: This is your primary tactic. Disarming a Brute (Circle/B, then Square/X) will leave them vulnerable and allow Ezio to wield their powerful weapon, often killing them in one hit.
    • Dodge & Attack: Dodge their slow, powerful swings (X/A on PlayStation/Xbox) and follow up with quick attacks to their exposed back or sides.
    • Poison Blade: A single dose of Poison Blade will slowly incapacitate them, causing them to flail wildly before collapsing. This is excellent for distracting other guards or for a safe, hands-off kill. Purchase Poison Vials from any Doctor.
    • Throwing Knives: While not a one-hit kill, a volley of Throwing Knives can chip away at their health from a distance, especially useful if you're low on health or surrounded. Acquire Throwing Knives from any Blacksmith.
  • Strategy: Always prioritize disarming Brutes. If you cannot, keep your distance, dodge their attacks, and use your fastest weapon (like the Hidden Blade for quick jabs after a dodge) or ranged options.

Seekers (Spear Guards)

  • Description: These guards carry long spears and are adept at flushing Ezio out of hiding spots like haystacks and benches. They wear medium armor.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Counter-Attack (with weapon): While they cannot be counter-killed with the Hidden Blade, a well-timed counter with a sword or other weapon is effective.
    • Dodge & Attack: Their spear attacks have a long reach but are relatively slow. Dodge their thrusts and move in for quick strikes.
    • Hidden Blade Assassination: From stealth, the Hidden Blade is still a one-hit kill.
    • Throwing Knives: Effective for softening them up before engaging in close combat.
  • Strategy: Be wary of their ability to find you in hiding. If you're spotted, engage them quickly. Their long reach can be a problem in tight spaces, so try to fight them in open areas where you can maneuver.

Archers (Ranged Guards)

  • Description: Positioned on rooftops and high vantage points, archers provide ranged support for ground patrols. They wear light armor.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Hidden Blade Assassination: The most efficient way to deal with archers is a silent assassination from above or behind. Climb up to their position and use a High Profile Assassination or a simple stealth kill.
    • Throwing Knives: A single Throwing Knife to the head is often a one-hit kill, or two to the body. This is ideal for clearing rooftops from a distance without alerting others.
    • Crossbow: Once acquired, the Crossbow is a silent and deadly ranged weapon that can dispatch archers with ease. Purchase the Crossbow from a Blacksmith after Sequence 5.
  • Strategy: Always eliminate archers first when planning an assault on a guarded area. Their arrows can interrupt your combat flow and drain your health quickly. Prioritize stealth to avoid alerting ground patrols.

Agiles (Fast Guards)

  • Description: These nimble guards are lightly armored and carry daggers. They are quick, can climb almost as well as Ezio, and often attempt to flank you.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Counter-Attack: Like standard guards, they are susceptible to counter-attacks.
    • Throwing Knives: Their light armor makes them vulnerable to throwing knives, often requiring only one or two to take down.
    • Environmental Kills: Due to their agility, they often follow Ezio across rooftops, making them prime targets for ledge assassinations or pushing them off high places.
  • Strategy: Agiles can be annoying due to their speed and climbing ability. If they pursue you on rooftops, use your superior parkour skills to gain an advantage, then turn and assassinate them as they catch up. In open combat, treat them like faster standard guards.

Captains (Elite Guards)

  • Description: These are higher-ranking guards, often found leading patrols or guarding important locations. They wear distinctive, often ornate, armor and wield various weapons. They have more health and are more resilient to attacks.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Poison Blade: Highly effective for a slow, guaranteed kill without direct confrontation.
    • Hidden Blade Assassination: A stealth assassination is always the best option.
    • Disarm & Use Their Weapon: If forced into open combat, disarming them and using their own powerful weapon against them is a strong tactic.
    • Smoke Bombs: Use a Smoke Bomb to stun them, then follow up with a quick Hidden Blade kill or multiple weapon strikes. Purchase Smoke Bombs from any Doctor.
  • Strategy: Avoid direct confrontation with Captains if possible. Prioritize stealth assassinations. If combat is unavoidable, use your full arsenal of tools and techniques, combining disarms, dodges, and special weapon attacks.
