Social Stealth Mechanics
In Assassin's Creed II, blending seamlessly into the bustling crowds of Renaissance Italy is as crucial as your Hidden Blade. Social Stealth allows Ezio to avoid detection, escape pursuers, and even set up opportune assassinations without drawing attention to himself. Mastering these mechanics will elevate your gameplay from a brute-force approach to the elegant dance of a true Assassin.
Understanding Notoriety
Your Notoriety Level dictates how easily guards will spot and pursue you. A high Notoriety means guards are on high alert, recognizing Ezio from a distance. A low Notoriety allows you to move freely, often unnoticed. Always aim to keep your Notoriety as low as possible, especially before critical missions.
- Increasing Notoriety:
- Committing crimes (murder, theft, assault).
- Being spotted by guards in restricted areas.
- Engaging in open combat.
- Destroying wanted posters in plain sight of guards.
- Decreasing Notoriety:
- Tearing Down Wanted Posters: These are scattered throughout cities like Florence, Venice, and Forlì. Look for glowing white icons on your mini-map. Each poster removed reduces your Notoriety slightly.
- Bribing Heralds: Heralds are identifiable by their distinct cries and often stand on street corners. Approach them and pay a small fee (usually 50 Florins) to have them spread positive rumors about Ezio, significantly reducing your Notoriety.
- Assassinating Corrupt Officials: These officials, often found in heavily guarded areas, are responsible for spreading negative propaganda about Ezio. Eliminating them will drastically lower your Notoriety in that specific district. They are marked with a target icon on your map.
Blending into Crowds
The most fundamental social stealth technique is blending. When Ezio is within a group of civilians, his presence becomes less conspicuous to guards. This is indicated by a white outline around Ezio, signifying he is successfully blended.
- Standard Blend: Simply walk or stand among a group of at least three civilians. Ezio will automatically blend. This is effective for moving through crowded streets or hiding in plain sight.
- Bench Blend: Find an empty bench and sit down. If civilians are nearby, Ezio will blend, becoming almost invisible to patrolling guards. This is excellent for waiting out guard patrols or observing an area.
- Courtesan Blend: Hire a group of Courtesans (marked with a pink icon on your map, costing 150 Florins). Once hired, they will follow Ezio. Walking with them automatically blends Ezio, and they can also be used to distract guards.
- Mercenary Blend: Hire a group of Mercenaries (marked with a red icon, costing 150 Florins). While they don't blend Ezio directly, they can engage guards in combat, drawing attention away from Ezio and allowing him to move past undetected.
- Thief Blend: Hire a group of Thieves (marked with a blue icon, costing 150 Florins). Similar to Mercenaries, Thieves can create diversions by pickpocketing or causing general chaos, allowing Ezio to slip by. They are particularly useful for drawing guards away from specific points.
Distraction and Diversion Tactics
Beyond simple blending, Ezio has several tools and abilities to actively manipulate guard patrols and create openings.
- Throwing Coins: Select the "Throw Coins" ability from your weapon wheel. Throwing a handful of Florins (usually 10 Florins per throw) will attract a crowd of civilians, who will scramble to pick up the money. This creates a temporary, dense blend group that Ezio can use, or it can distract guards who will investigate the commotion. This is particularly effective for drawing guards away from a doorway or patrol route.
- Courtesan Distraction: While blended with Courtesans, target a group of guards and command the Courtesans to distract them. The Courtesans will engage the guards in conversation, holding their attention for a short period, allowing Ezio to pass or perform an action unobserved.
- Mercenary Engagement: Command hired Mercenaries to attack a group of guards. This will initiate open combat, drawing all nearby guard attention to the fight, providing Ezio with a clear path.
- Thief Diversion: Command hired Thieves to pickpocket guards or cause a ruckus. This can lure guards away from their posts or create a momentary distraction for Ezio to exploit.
Advanced Social Stealth Strategies
- Pre-emptive Notoriety Management: Before undertaking a major assassination or infiltration, take a few minutes to tear down wanted posters and bribe Heralds in the target district. This will significantly reduce the risk of being spotted.
- Using the Environment: Look for opportunities to use the environment to your advantage. Haystacks, benches, and dense crowds are your best friends. Remember that guards have a cone of vision; use buildings and corners to break line of sight.
- Controlled Aggression: Sometimes, a quick, silent assassination from a blend spot is the most effective way to clear a path. If you can eliminate a troublesome guard without breaking your blend, do so. Just be mindful of other guards' proximity.
- Escape Routes: Always have an escape plan. If your social stealth fails and you're detected, know where the nearest blend spot, rooftop, or body of water is to quickly disappear.
By effectively combining these social stealth mechanics, Ezio can navigate the most heavily guarded areas of Renaissance Italy with the grace and lethality of a true Master Assassin.
