Liberation Missions

As Connor Kenway, a pivotal part of your fight for freedom in Colonial America involves weakening British control in the major cities of Boston and New York. This is achieved through Liberation Missions, a series of district-specific objectives designed to destabilize enemy presence and rally the local populace to your cause. Successfully completing these missions not only contributes to the overall liberation of a district but also unlocks invaluable Assassin Recruits, each possessing unique skills that can be called upon during combat, stealth, or even for strategic diversions.

Understanding Liberation Missions

Each major city (Boston and New York) is divided into several districts. To achieve 100% liberation in a district, you must complete a set number of specific Liberation Missions. These missions vary in objective but generally fall into categories such as:

  • Eliminating British Officers/Patrols: Targeting key military personnel or groups of soldiers to reduce their presence.
  • Destroying Supply Convoys: Intercepting and destroying valuable British resources, often guarded by multiple soldiers.
  • Protecting Citizens: Defending civilians from British harassment or execution.
  • Disrupting Propaganda: Tearing down posters or silencing town criers spreading anti-Patriot messages.
  • Rescuing Civilians: Freeing captured citizens from British custody.

Upon completing all Liberation Missions within a district, you will unlock a new Assassin Recruit for your Brotherhood. There are three recruits available in Boston and three in New York, totaling six powerful allies.

General Strategies for Success

While specific mission objectives vary, a few overarching strategies will help you complete Liberation Missions efficiently and effectively:

  • Prioritize Stealth: Many Liberation Missions benefit greatly from a stealthy approach. Eliminating targets quietly, using environmental tools (bushes, haystacks, wells), and avoiding direct confrontation will often lead to quicker and less complicated completions. Use your Eagle Vision (press L3/LS) to identify targets and patrol routes.
  • Utilize the Environment: The urban landscapes of Boston and New York are your playgrounds. Use rooftops for silent approaches, blend into crowds, and use cover to your advantage. Climbing and parkour are not just for traversal; they are essential stealth tools.
  • Master Counter-Attacks: If open combat is unavoidable, ensure you've mastered Connor's counter-attack mechanics. A well-timed counter can turn the tide against multiple enemies. Disarming larger enemies (Brutes, Grenadiers) is also crucial.
  • Employ Smoke Bombs: Smoke Bombs are invaluable for both offense and defense. They can create an escape route, disorient groups of enemies for easy assassinations, or provide cover for objective interaction.
  • Scout First: Before engaging, take a moment to observe enemy patrols, target locations, and potential escape routes. Planning your approach can save a lot of frustration.
  • Upgrade Your Gear: Ensure Connor has the best available equipment. Upgraded hidden blades, pistols, and pouches for carrying more consumables will make a significant difference.

Assassin Recruits and Their Abilities

Each recruit you gain through Liberation Missions brings a unique ability to your arsenal, accessible via the Assassin's Guild menu (D-Pad Left). These abilities can be used to assist Connor in various situations, from combat to stealth. You can call upon up to three recruits at a time, depending on the mission and your progress.

Boston Recruits:

Completing all Liberation Missions in Boston will unlock the following three recruits:

  • Stephane Chapheau:
    • Ability: Ambush - Recruits will hide and ambush a designated group of enemies, often resulting in swift, silent takedowns. Excellent for clearing patrols or distracting guards.
    • Best Used For: Eliminating small groups of isolated enemies, creating diversions, or clearing a path to an objective.
  • Clipper Wilkinson:
    • Ability: Bodyguard - Recruits will engage a designated group of enemies in open combat, drawing their attention away from Connor.
    • Best Used For: Creating a distraction during open combat, allowing Connor to focus on a specific target or escape.
  • Dobby Carter:
    • Ability: Covert Assassination - Recruits will silently eliminate a single designated target from a distance.
    • Best Used For: Taking out high-priority targets (e.g., officers, snipers) without alerting nearby guards.

New York Recruits:

Completing all Liberation Missions in New York will unlock these three recruits:

  • Duncan Little:
    • Ability: Riot - Recruits will incite a riot among civilians, drawing the attention of nearby guards and creating a chaotic diversion.
    • Best Used For: Escaping pursuit, creating large-scale distractions, or allowing Connor to move through heavily guarded areas unnoticed.
  • Jacob Zenger:
    • Ability: Snipe - Recruits will position themselves and snipe a designated target with a musket.
    • Best Used For: Eliminating distant targets, especially those on rooftops or in elevated positions, without drawing immediate attention to Connor's location.
  • Corrine:
    • Ability: Lure - Recruits will lure a designated enemy away from their post, creating an opening for Connor.
    • Best Used For: Isolating patrol members, creating gaps in guard formations, or drawing enemies into an ambush.

Common Pitfalls and Tips

  • Don't Rush: Especially in stealth-focused missions, patience is key. Observe patrol patterns and wait for the opportune moment to strike.
  • Be Aware of Snipers: British snipers on rooftops can quickly ruin a stealth approach. Prioritize eliminating them if they pose a threat to your path.
  • Manage Your Notoriety: High notoriety will make Liberation Missions more challenging due to increased guard presence. Use the various methods (tearing down posters, bribing heralds) to keep your notoriety low.
  • Use the Map: The in-game map (press Select/Back) clearly marks Liberation Mission icons. Use it to track your progress and locate objectives.
  • Practice Your Tools: Get comfortable with all of Connor's tools – rope darts, pistols, trip mines, and especially the bow. Each has its utility in different scenarios.

By systematically completing Liberation Missions and strategically utilizing your Assassin Recruits, you will not only weaken the British hold on the colonies but also build a formidable Brotherhood capable of turning the tide of the Revolution.
